Album Description
“Aerial Image”—meaning “fleeting image”—is more than just a title; it also sets the tone. Just as fleeting as the images rushing past a train window, Reinhold Schmölzer’s pieces create images in the mind that not only inspire reflection and memory but almost compel them. Like a wave that returns again and again yet never takes the same form, Reinhold Schmölzer’s compositions are constantly evolving. Although he is still considered a young composer, he has found his personal style. He is—as attested not only by international awards and composition/arrangement commissions from renowned orchestras but also by various music journalists—a master at constructing complex themes that surprise rhythmically and captivate with seemingly endless melodic arcs underpinned by sophisticated harmonies. He has succeeded in developing the paths laid out for him by mentors such as Ed Partyka, John Hollenbeck, and David Friedman into his own unique direction. To this end, he also employs a somewhat expanded sonic palette. In addition to the traditional big-band sound, he enriches the sonic possibilities on this CD through the use of a tubax, various percussion instruments, and a vibraphone coupled with electronic effects.
