Pablo Ziegler: Buenos Aires Report
by Ralph A. Miriello
To hear the delightful sounds of Argentinean tango/jazz pianist, Pablo Ziegler and his trio on Buenos Aires Report is to allow oneself the indulgence of being transported to strolling the streets of Buenos Aires or to be swept into a scene of casual open-air dining at a late night café in Paris. The music is a ...
Hector Martignon: Refugee
by Ralph A. Miriello
In listening to pianist/vocalist Hector Martignon's Refugee, I was immediately attracted to his notable sidemen, including Richard Bona, Kenny Baron, Eddie Gomez and Jeff Tain Watts. Martignon obviously has the chops, and so the only question is if his music is compelling enough to carry off an album as a leader. He has done so admirably.
Boots Randolph: A Whole New Ballgame
by Jerry D'Souza
Saxophonist Boots Randolph has been an integral part of several recordings that remain cornerstones in his career. Any fan of Elvis Presley will remember the edge he brought to the songs on Elvis Is Back! (RCA, 1960), with Reconsider Baby being a stand-out. However, Randolph went past that to notch up more great moments with Roy ...
Jimmy Hall & The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Collective: Build Your Own Fire
by Jerry D'Souza
Singer/harmonicist Jimmy Hall was once a Wet Willie. The band, formed in 1969, went on to create some lively, good time music that found its spirit in the blues, rock 'n' roll and a tinge of white soul. After they had their day in the sun, they disbanded (though they still continue playing concerts as Wet ...
Boots Randolph: A Whole New Ballgame
by C. Michael Bailey
Homer Louis Randolph III was born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1927. He has recorded widely since the 1950s, providing his unique Southern tenor saxophone sound on recordings as varied as Roy Orbison ("Oh, Pretty Woman ), REO Speedwagon's cover of Chuck Berry's ("Little Queenie"), Al Hirt("Java"), Jerry Lee Lewis ( Turn On Your Lovelight") and Brenda ...
Hector Martignon: Refugee
by C. Michael Bailey
Native Columbian Pianist Hector Martignon closes his liner notes to Refugee thusly: Although I play the acoustic and electric pianos in all tunes...I prefer the role I almost instinctively adopted, paraphrasing Auguste Rodin: provide boulders of marble of distinctive shapes and sizes to a group of sculptors and then collectively carve out the most beautiful shapes ...
Hector Martignon: Refugee
by Jerry D'Souza
Pianist Hector Martignon gathers together the musicians who played as Foreign Affair for this, his third recording as leader. The group began as an acoustic trio before going the electric route in 1998. Besides the two recordings, Portrait in Black and White (Candid, 1996) and The Foreign Affair (Candid, 2000), there were tours and concerts. Martignon ...
Hector Martignon: Refugee
by Mark F. Turner
Like the great Latin jazz pianists Eddie Palmieri and Hilton Ruiz, Hector Martignon is one hot player (un pianist caliente). The musician, composer, and band leader has performed with Celia Cruz and Ray Barretto, and has created a body of work which includes orchestral music, jingles, and other formats. On Refugee, his third release as a ...
Jimmy Hall & The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Collective: Build Your Own Fire
by C. Michael Bailey
Singer/harmonicist Jimmy Hall's Build Your Own Fire is the third in Zoho Music's Roots series, joining Bonnie Bramlett's Roots, Blues, and Jazz and Ike Turner's Risin' With the Blues. These first two releases have been enthusiastically received, encouraging label founder Joachim Becker to expand the scope of his Latin Music with a New York Vibe. This ...
Jimmy Hall & The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Collective: Build Your Own Fire
by Jim Santella
This down-to-earth blues album by Jimmy Hall and The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Collective comes as a tribute to an unsung member of the southern blues community. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Eddie Hinton (1944-1995) was one of those guys who held genius in the palm of his hand but couldn't handle it in the end. We've known other jazz and ...
