Torres was born September 4, 1976 in Colombia’s bustling capital city of Bogotá and was nurtured in this culturally sophisticated metropolis where jazz and classical music share the stage with salsa and an infinite variety of Colombian folkloric idioms. His earliest exposure to music came at home, thanks to an extended family of musicians and ready access to a wealth of Colombian music genres, from the infectious rhythms of the cumbia and vallenato to styles which reflect a range of African, indigenous and European influences, including the porro, bambuco and pasillo. In his ingenuitive and innovative curiosity, Marvin played on a bucket, a dresser's drawer, the side of a closet or a wooden table to replace the sounds of 'tumbadoras', 'cajones' and 'cucharas', at his grandmother's or aunt's birthday celebrations, year after year. Besides the influence of his father, a prominent and respected musician in the musical world for his work in the Cuban's National Folkloric Group (Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba), Miguel Valdes Alli; Marvin's brother, became a strong influence between the ages of 8 and 9.
