Fred Hersch: In Amsterdam: Live at the Bimhuis

Read "In Amsterdam: Live at the Bimhuis" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

It's time to use the g-word when referring to Fred Hersch. Although the word has been overused and thoroughly diluted in our culture, for me it's as elusive as the g-spot. In fact, I've never used the term “genius" to describe a living artist--at least, not until now--and it's probably long overdue, at that.

Steve Kuhn Trio: Pavane for a Dead Princess

Read "Pavane for a Dead Princess" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

Anything that pianist Steve Kuhn does is likely to be beautifully executed and tasteful, and Pavane for a Dead Princess is no exception. Here, he and his empathic collaborators David Finck (bass) and Billy Drummond (drums) address themselves to the stock classical repertoire, jazzing up eleven popular pieces from Debussy, Rachmaninov, Tchaikowsky, Grieg, Brahms and Chopin. ...

Baden Powell: Baden Live at Bruxelles

Read "Baden Live at Bruxelles" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

Although this solo live CD was recorded a year before Baden Powell's death in 1999, it shows no diminishing of his extraordinary power. It also features his rarely-heard voice on a few tracks. Slightly rough but warm and true, it fits the Brazilian preference for soulful over pretty singing. In a land famous for many superb ...

Lynn Seaton Trio: Puttin' on the Ritz

Read "Puttin' on the Ritz" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

The legend goes that Dizzy Gillespie once said “It's taken me all my life to learn what not to play." This quote came to mind while listening to Lynn Seaton's brilliant Puttin' on the Ritz, where careful choices create one of the tightest and most swinging trios around. There's no fluff or filler here and no ...

Carolyn Leonhart: New 8th Day

Read "New 8th Day" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

In a world full of cookie-cutter jazz vocalists and instant vanity CDs (just add water), it's rare to hear a singer who has both chops and discernible style. Carolyn Leonhart is one of the few: it's a pleasure to hear the intelligence and nuance in her delivery, and she also swings her posterior off. Add to ...

Slide Hampton: Slide Plays Jobim

Read "Slide Plays Jobim" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

Slide Hampton Plays the Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim came out in 2002, but like many indie releases, it continues to be “discovered through chance and good fortune. I stumbled upon it after a series of happy coincidences, and as a confessed Jobimaniac, I was delighted to find a fresh approach to the material I know ...

The Clayton Brothers Quintet: Back in the Swing of Things

Read "Back in the Swing of Things" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

Beginning with the irresistible, headlong groove of the first track, Back in the Swing of Things is yet another jubliant, world-class outing from the Clayton Brothers Quintet. The joyride begins with the irresistible groove of the first track and takes the listener through a bright landscape of originals, including two short, witty solo comments by each ...

Shelly Berg: Blackbird

Read "Blackbird" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

It's evident from the first track that Blackbird is a superior trio release, as classy and swinging as they ever get. Seasoned with brilliance and sprinkled with wit, this recording is artfully paced and nicely balanced between ballads and burners--all of which is immediately obvious. What emerges only later, after reaching for the CD again and ...

Billy Childs Ensemble: Lyric: Jazz-Chamber Music Vol. 1

Read "Lyric: Jazz-Chamber Music Vol. 1" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

Two questions come to mind when encountering Billy Child's intriguing, long-overdue new release. First, what exactly is “jazz-chamber music"? Is the “chamber music" part simply a function of adding classical instrumentation (strings, harp) or a reference to occasional resemblances to Bach and Satie and the French impressionists--or is it just a new banner flying over what ...

Luciana Souza: Duos II

Read "Duos II" reviewed by Dr. Judith Schlesinger

Luciana Souza's first recording of voice/guitar duets (Brazilian Duos, Suunyside 2002), was nominated for a Grammy. Her latest, Duos II, is similar in format and content; I checked my earlier review and a few glowing assessments still apply--words like “wit," “intelligence," “swing," and “poignancy." The music is still intimate and immediate (it's live), the liners again ...
