Jimmy Smith: The Sermon and Organ Grinder Swing

Read "Jimmy Smith: The Sermon and Organ Grinder Swing" reviewed by David Adler

These two albums were recorded nearly ten years apart, the first for Blue Note and the second for Verve. The First, The Sermon, contains only three tracks, presented here with no editing and no alternate takes. While it is certainly a stellar example of Jimmy Smith's concept, it's even more novel as a document of the ...

Joe Henderson; Kenny Dorham; Wayne Shorter: Our Thing; Whistle Stop; The All Seeing Eye

Read "Our Thing; Whistle Stop; The All Seeing Eye" reviewed by David Adler

Like all the Rudy Van Gelder Edition reissues, these three were given royal treatment in the control room. Aside from one alternate take on the Joe Henderson CD, they contain no previously unreleased material at all. The excellent sound leaps out of the speakers, eloquent testimony to the unparalleled talents of three Blue Note giants.

Dave Douglas: A Thousand Evenings

Read "A Thousand Evenings" reviewed by David Adler

Bringing the “Charms of the Night Sky" ensemble to his new creative home at RCA Victor, trumpeter and over-achiever Dave Douglas releases his third album of the year, A Thousand Evenings. Various Artists: Originations

Read "Originations" reviewed by David Adler

This was an idea whose time had come. Nearly every member of Chick Corea’s Origin has a solo record or two out on Corea’s Stretch label. (Drummer Jeff Ballard’s trio project is not far off at the time of this writing.) With Origin and on their own, these young players and composers have been creating great ...

Keith Jarrett: Whisper Not

Read "Whisper Not" reviewed by David Adler

Recorded live in 1999 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, Keith Jarrett’s standards trio has rarely sounded more focused and brilliant. For one thing, a premium is put on brevity. There are none of the aimless 20-minute codas that one hears on some previous albums. Only “What Is This Thing Called Love," which opens disc ...

Bob Dorough & Dave Frishberg: Zoot At Ease

Read "Zoot At Ease" reviewed by David Adler

In addition to their achievements in the jazz world, Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg made an indelible mark on popular culture with Schoolhouse Rock, the beloved educational TV series from the 70s. Dorough served as musical director for the animated shorts and wrote many of the cherished songs. Frishberg, for his part, wrote “I’m Just a ...

Charlie Byrd: The Best of the Concord Years

Read "The Best of the Concord Years" reviewed by David Adler

The late Charlie Byrd was one of those jazz figures whose choice of instrument alone made him stand out. His nylon-string guitar was ideally suited to the bossa nova idiom, in which he made his most famous historical contributions. This two-disc package captures Byrd a bit later in his career — specifically, the period from 1979 ...
