Fie Schouten

Fie Schouten is a renowned Dutch clarinettist, known for her expertise in contemporary and improvised music, with a particular focus on the low clarinets. Based in Amsterdam, she is an active soloist and performs with various ensembles and collaborators. She has been a guest musician with the prestigious German Ensemble Musikfabrik for 15 years. Over the course of her career, more than 100 works have been composed specifically for her, which she has premiered in various formations.

Schouten is the Artistic Director of the "Basklarinet Festijn," a festival dedicated to the bass clarinet, which had it's first edition in 2014. She has released albums on labels such as Attacca, Trytone, Karnatic Lab Records, Kairos, and Relative Pitch Records.

Allison Burik

Allison Burik is a saxophonist, clarinetist, improviser, and composer based in Tio'tia:ke/Montreal, Quebec. Their current collaborations include Montreal collective “Bellbird,” experimental duo “Umbrella Pine,” and the “Mali Obomsawin Xtet”. Their debut solo album, Realm, (2024) explores the sonic possibilities of the woodwinds through electronics and contact microphones, resulting in soundscapes that are both earthy and alien. The music for Realm is inspired by mythology, folklore, and world history. They have performed in festivals, residencies, and concerts in places as far reaching as France, South Korea, Canada, and the US

Adam Cordero

Born: November 18, 1999

New York native Adam Cordero is a saxophonist, composer, educator, and multi-instrumentalist based in Queens, New York. His dedication to music has led him to play at the most established jazz venues in the NYC area such as The Jazz Gallery, Smalls Jazz Club, Roulette Intermedium, Bar Next Door, and Williamsburg Music Center. Adam has also performed internationally for a week-long engagement at the Bern Jazz Festival '21, held in Switzerland, as well as South Korea ('24) for a series of four concerts. Adam’s quintet, “Arcadia” strives to unite people in the need to preserve our environment. "Arcadia" holds benefit concerts throughout the year— their most recent event was held on April 24th, 2024 at Julian's NYC, raising money for the PCRF. In 2022, Adam's career as a bassoonist led him to collaborate with avant-garde jazz legend & Pulitzer Prize winner, Henry Threadgill for his multimedia project "The Other One" which was performed + recorded live at Roulette Intermedium and released as an album in 2023. Adam has shared the stage with other incredible artists such as Morgan Guerin, Alfredo Colon, Ingrid Jensen, David Virelles, and Tyshawn Sorey. Adam's most recent album recorded with Odin Scherer in 2023, Sonora, "explores musical landscapes, balancing robustness and fragility to evoke significant emotional responses" according to acclaimed reviewer Filipe Freitas at JazzTrail. Adam was named a National YoungArts Foundation Winner in 2018 and in 2019, he performed and was broadcasted on the East Coast's premier jazz radio station, WBGO. In addition to playing saxophones & bassoon primarily, Adam also plays clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute. ​

Evan Francis

NYC-based EVAN FRANCIS writes, arranges, and has performed extensively in various Latin, Jazz and Pop music scenes on
both coasts. Originally from Los Angeles, he was the featured flute soloist on the Pacific Mambo Orchestra's Grammy-winning album, and
in Downbeat Magazine Critics' Poll, he has been named a 'Rising Star' for six years in a row. Evan has toured and recorded in many

Paul Cutlan

Born: July 17, 1964

Paul’s uniquely expressive voice as a multi-instrumentalist and composer is informed by many styles, including contemporary classical music, world music and jazz. He graduated from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in 1987 with Honours in Composition. Orchestral performance experience includes the Tasmanian and Sydney Symphony Orchestras and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Paul has performed with many jazz/improvising groups committed to presenting original Australian music. International acts with whom he has performed include Lou Reed, Bobby Previte, Jim McNeely, Ólafur Arnalds, Jerry Lewis and Michael Bublé

Stefano Doglioni

Born: November 15, 1986

Jazz bass clarinetist Stefano Doglioni was born in 1986 in Feltre, Italy.
He began playing classical clarinet at the age of 9 and since 2004 he dedicated himself exclusively to the bass clarinet.

After receiving his bachelor degree in Jazz Music at the Conservatory of Bologna in 2010 he continued his studies at the "Royal Conservatory" of Den Haag and at the "New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music" in New York. His mentors include Barry Harris, Charles Davis, Chris Byars, John Ruocco.

Stefano has performed in Italy, Holland, Switzerland, France, Africa and USA and he had the privilege to work with notable musicians Freddie Redd, Franz Elsen, Charles Davis, Leroy Williams, Jimmy Wormworth, Ari Roland, Chris Byars, Sacha Perry, John Mosca, Luigi Grasso, Pasquale Grasso, Zaid Nasser, The Mingus Orchestra.

Hanne De Backer

Hanne De Backer is an Antwerp based saxophone player and performer. She is an energetic and versatile improvisor and founder of  g a b b r o , a fluid collective of musicians and other artists that confront free improvisation with unexpected locations and its inhabitants. So far,  g a b b r o  has been playing and recording in empty exhibiton-halls, old sewage systems, parking lots, laundrettes, the prison of Antwerp, on roofs and mountains and, for the last project, along the Belgian coastline.  g a b b r o  has released two well-received LP's on two Belgian labels: 'gabbro'  (El Negocito Records, 2017) and 'granular' (Dropa Disc, 2019).

David Bertrand

David grew up in the Trinidadian neighborhood of Cocorite, four lanes of highway from the sea. Growing up, he played a wide range of classical and folk music before a chance BBC jazz broadcast at midnight through his grandmother’s GE radio forever changed his relationship with music. Encouraged by the artistry of Joe Farrell and Kent Jordan, he was determined to join the fraternity of musicians who have championed the flute as a credible jazz instrument.

His own voice has been deeply influenced by the world of jazz tenor saxophone, the instrument he’d always felt connected to which was simply not available in his band program at the time. Initially drawn to the iconic figures of John Coltrane and Joe Henderson, his ear also turned to the voices of players active in his lifetime: in the days of dial-up internet, a young David would patiently wait upwards of a hour just so he could hear the likes of Mark Turner, Chris Bacas and John Ellis for the first time. 

Richard Maegraith

Richard Maegraith, like the musicians he has assembled for this recording, is one of the most respected musicians in the city in which he spends most of his time in Sydney. It is always tempting to list the great achievements of a musicians career and the great players with whom he has worked over years of performances and recordings. But improvising is always about being in the moment, making real time decisions and looking ahead - which is something all of the musicians on this recording manifest again and again throughout these series of pieces.
