Philadelphia Heritage Art Ensemble

Active since:
Fred Adams, an inspiring composer and bandleader, formed the Philadelphia based jazz sextet known as the Philadelphia Heritage Art Ensemble (PHAE) in 1993. The PHAE was created as a result of a proposal made by Ron Dewey Wynn to present the compositions of the late Philadelphia jazz composers Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan along with Fred's original compositions at the Mill Creek Cultural Center in Philadelphia. It was there that Fred joined the house band with additional artists and the PHAE was born.
The PHAE is keeping the Philadelphia jazz sound of the '50s and '60s alive representing the Philly East Coast hardbop sound by doing arrangements by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Jymie Merritt, McCoy Tyner, Philly Joe Jones, and Dizzy Gillespie along with original compositions by Fred Adams.
The PHAE lineup includes Fred Adams leading the band on trumpet, one of three innovative jazz musicians rotating in the tenor sax chair, Brent White on trombone, one of two forward thinking Philly based jazz musicians on piano, Sonny Sunkett on bass, and Craig McIver on drums.
The band has performed at a variety of venues including Birdland in New York City, Kelsey’s and the Chicken Bone Beach Festival in Atlantic City, along with several locations in its home base of Philadelphia including Ortlieb’s Jazz Club, the Clef Club, Drummers, and the Platinum Grille

The Band

Active since:
For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan. And for a long time, their personalities were as recognizable individually to the casual music public as the members of the Beatles. Aka Moon

Active since:
Since their debut in 1992, it has been hard to imagine the Belgian jazz scene without the innovative Aka Moon. Their refreshing approach to jazz gives the trio a highly distinctive sound. Since their first encounter with the Aka Pygmies in 1992, Aka Moon’s focus has shifted towards various different African, Indian, Maghrebian, Cuban, Arab, Afro-American and European traditions. The unique place Aka Moon occupies in todays music scene is down to the fact that they, independent of any particular trends, combine art with inspired musical craftsmanship. Aka Moon juggles with polyrhythms and polyphonies like mad DJ’s

Exuberance

Jazz has evolved into multiple styles and camps--some today disavowing the very name. Philadelphia sextet Exuberance respectfully embraces the term, its proud history, its restless energy, and its focus on the basics of melody, harmony, rhythm and improvisation. Tuneful and accessible without being square, the group provides a joyful exploration of the genre we know and love as jazz. This is music to be enjoyed, perhaps with your favorite cocktail in hand. If you want to experience an exemplary live performance, Exuberance consists of a literal “who’s who” in the Philadelphia jazz scene, comprised of percussionist Doc Gibbs (Emeril Live), the venerable and ubiquitous bassist Mike Boone, whirlwind vibraphonist Hideo Morris, the propulsive, inventive drummer Joe Truglio, and the youthful, impressive (dare we say exuberant) Mike Cemprola on saxophones and clarinet. And the tunes? Composer, band leader, and pianist Matt Yaple values the communicative aspect of his work
