YouTube is blocking music videos belonging to the largest music labels after negotiations broke down this week. The portal baulked at Gema's demand of EUR12 (16) per play.
Gema, which reps 60,000 German composers, songwriters and music publishers as well as more than a million rights holders around the world, said that it offered YouTube 1 per stream in exchange for greater transparency and data on the most watched videos, something it said YouTube has refused to provide.
As a result, Gema is charging YouTube the same rate it charges providers of music video-on-demand portals, 16 per video, a price that is unacceptable for the Google website.
YouTube had a similar dispute with U.K. royalty org the Performing Rights Society royalty last month.
