Westchester Jazz Orchestra
Westchester, NY -- The Westchester Jazz Orchestra received national recognition last year with the release of its debut CD, All In, which reached #4 in radio airplay across the US and Canada. Described by critics as hugely impressive, exceptional, and setting a standard in big band modern jazz, the sixteen-piece WJO performs an annual concert series and brings jazz education programs to the Westchester vicinity.

WJO already encourages students to attend its performances with the incredibly low student ticket price of $5.

Now the Orchestra is adding another incentive: every school that brings at least 15 students to one of the remaining season concerts this year on January 31, April 18 or June 6 will be entered in a drawing to win a free 2-hour clinic with WJOs Artistic Director, Mike Holober. Over 30 star-struck students from around the County attended WJOs last concert in November, says the Orchestras Executive Director, Emily Tabin. It was the first professional jazz concert for many of them and their enthusiasm helped create a very special evening.

My students thought the concert was awesome, commented Yorktown High School Band Director, Emily Kluga, who accompanied a large group of her students. One student told me that seeing WJO in action made him want to practice more. The trip has made a lasting impression.

WJOs next concert, The Music of Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter, with special guest, John Patitucci, will be held on Sat., Jan. 31 at 8 PM at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, and will be especially appropriate for students. Mr. Patitucci, a longtime sideman with both Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter, will join Mr. Holober for a pre-concert talk on listening to jazz and the evenings program. The chat is free for ticket holders and questions are encouraged. (The concert snow date is Sun., Feb. 1 at 2 PM with the talk beginning at 1:15.)

WJOs upcoming concerts include Jazz Goes to the Movies on Sat, April 18, and Americana on Sat, June 6. In addition, a sextet from WJO will appear as part of the Jazz on Film series of the Jacob Burns Film Center on Thurs, April 16.

WJOs performances are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Westchester Arts Council and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.

Reserved seating tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and only $5 for students. Subscription discounts are available. Order online at westjazzorch.org or by telephone at the Irvington Theater box office at 914-591-6602. Interested school personnel should contact Emily Tabin at 914-861-9100 or [email protected].
