Toshiba Funds Store Kiosks for Downloading Content

Several days after SanDisk announced plans to sell a microSD card pre-loaded with music, Toshiba and NCR Corporation said Thursday that they will invest $35 million in MOD Systems, which produces in-store kiosks that allow consumers to download content – including music and more – directly to portable devices.

NCR will work with MOD Systems on digital delivery to kiosks so customers will have access to a larger catalog of content, not just what is physically contained in the kiosk, said Adrienne Lenhart, MOD's director of marketing.

MOD produces an interactive, touch-screen Mod Pod kiosk, while NCR produces the Xpress Entertainment Kiosk. Neither device is currently SD-enabled, however, Lenhart said.

SanDisk's pre-loaded slotMusic SDcards will be available later this year.

MOD Systems is not part of slotMusic, “but we believe SD cards are the logical next step for digital media storage and delivery," Lenhart said. “The MOD, NCR and Toshiba initiative is designed to give consumers a fast, convenient way to download digital content at retail stores, airports and other locations using SD cards and portable devices such as mobile phones."
