This June, the Living Arts Apprenticeship is offering their fourth apprenticeship with a focus on advanced-level drum set study, Aikido and music composition. Participants will have the opportunity to refine their craft during a 12-day intensive period of inquiry and practice. They will work closely with a primary instructor, as well as acquire hands-on experience within the other surrounding art forms -gaining new insights as to how universal principles such as balance, timing, motion, rhythm, dissonance & harmony; that exist in all art forms, can profoundly impact the understanding, practice and depth of their art. Camping, fire-building, collective-cooking and a glimpse into the hunter's mind-set - will transport apprentices to the crude and primordial core from which all art-forms emerge. A return to times and places, where essential creative skills served as the crucial tools for human survival. We believe, that by touching the source, one will achieve a more profound mastery of their art today. Amir Ziv - critically acclaimed drummer, composer, bandleader and educator-has helped shape New York City's down-town music-scene for the last fifteen years, and has been a faculty member at the New School's Jazz & Contemporary Music Program since 1998. Amir has performed, recorded and given master-classes around the world and is regarded as a pioneer of the modern drum-set. Amir's teaching will center around three fundamental and sty-less aspects of drum-set playing - technique, coordination and polyrhythms - enabling drummers of ANY style, a deeper command of their instrument.

Jordan McLean - is a composer, arranger, bandleader and trumpeter, whose music is featured regularly at festivals and in clubs around the world. He currently works on Broadway as a music director for Fela!, one of musical theater's most groundbreaking productions. Jordan will be leading a composition & orchestration workshop, focusing on the cultivation of musical ideas and compositional techniques, culminating in the creation and recording of original works by the participants. Form and rhythm, melody and harmony, texture and timbre, sound and noise - will all be explored while providing a unique opportunity to immediately test new musical ideas within our polyrhythmic ensemble.

Gadi Shorr - founder of Core Aikido has practiced and taught Yoshinkan Aikido for over 20 years and holds the rank of 6th Dan. He is one of the few people in the world, outside of Japan, given the elite certification to establish a Dojo and teach in Japan. Gadi will employ outdoor Aikido training, focusing on sword maneuvering, spear throwing and empty-hand techniques, as well as core-Aikido fundamentals such as breathing techniques and body-center training. Dedicated Aikido students of all levels are invited to study with Gadi as their primary teacher.
