“Tyler Greenfield has both the taste and good sense in abundance, and we could count ourselves lucky to hear nowadays a performance of Cuban repertoire that is unselfconscious and without posturing. Listening to any music that is this natural is refreshing. It is unmatched in the manner of its dallying romance, in its fretful pacing, outright grief and elation. Much of the inner movements of the bolero are played under the breath, which the engineers and especially Bernie Grundman have captured admirably, with just enough of the musicians' own breath to let us know that they are in the room with us. A better album since Charlie Haden made Nocturne I have not heard from someone who is not Cuban." —Raul da Gama, JazzDaGama.

Sunday Bolero Review by Raul da Gama
4.5 Stars

Following a love for Latin music, Greenfield connected with an array of Cuban musicians in New York, including the acclaimed Cuban singer Xiomara Laugart. The album features Laugart on classic boleros including “Nosotros" and “Sabor a Mi". Xiomara was a vocalist in the Grammy-nominated group Yerba Buena. Aside from Laugart's presence, Sunday Bolero provides the masterful rhythms of percussionist Gabriel “Chinchilita" Machado and bassist Jorge Bringas. The talented Cuban trumpeter Kalí Rodríguez-Peña is a welcomed guest and brings a distinctly Cuban feel to tracks such as “Siboney". In fact, Greenfield is the only non-Cuban, but his thoughtful touch on the piano brings everything together with the panaché of a native who has been doing this for years.

Sunday Bolero can be enjoyed by jazz lovers looking to acquaint, or reacquaint themselves with classic Cuban treasures, songs written by some of the country's most famous composers: Ernesto Lecuona, René Touzet, Pedro Junco- as well as more recent numbers from Paquito D'Rivera. It can perhaps be the background to a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

In fact the album's title was inspired by Señor Bolero, a radio program which aired every Sunday, playing bolero classics selected by the Dominican-born host Francis Méndez. In December, Tyler met with Méndez, whose his signature is printed on the inside of the vinyl version of Sunday Bolero.

Bim Bom Studios took no shortcuts to provide a musical, audiophile-quality recording. The album is mastered (and cut for vinyl) by the legendary Bernie Grundman.

Sunday Bolero is available for digital purchase 12/20 directly through Bim Bom's music download page. Downloads are available in high-quality lossless format. Also available on iTunes. Vinyl lovers! Sunday Bolero is available as a 180-gram LP, printed in a beautiful gatefold jacket. Listen to a sample of his work here on YouTube.
