Steve Backer Departs Savoy Label Group
Veteran jazz A&R executive Steve Backer has departed from the Savoy Label Group. When queried, Backer cited “vast philosophical differences, managerially as well as artistically" as the reason for his departure.
In this most recent incarnation from Savoy/Denon, Backer has been responsible for re-conceptualizing their vast archives, in addition to signing and recording new artists for the label, such as Andy Bey, James Moody, Hubert Laws, Fly (Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard), Carol Welsman, Lou Rawls, and others.
