Guided by jazz’s freedom and hip-hop’s precision, the production bends time and gravity—grimy bass, cinematic tension, and improvisational edges sharp enough to cut through steel. Influences like Digable Planets, Guru, and Del The Funky Homosapien orbit in the distance, but Spectaculous moves in its own constellation: Afrofuturist, assertive, and vividly alive.
The journey begins with a birth-of-the-galaxy awakening (“Primordia”), rebels inside dystopian collapse (“Overlord”), celebrates unapologetic queerness (“Could Never”), and channels righteous fury as fuel (“Bite”). “Outta Character” fuses punk and salsa into street-level protest, while “No Regrets” and “Tempo” deliver reflection and propulsion—proof that healing is its own form of revolution.
To mark the release, Spectaculous will perform on Saturday, December 13 at Atwood Music Hall (Madison), supporting Dessa. Expect a performance that feels more like a ritual—a live wire of politics, joy, and sonic world-building.
The project represents the collision of Atlanta and Madison: Dequadray White—a vocalist, producer, and community advocate—joins Mr. Chair, the trio of pianist Jason Kutz, bassist Ben Ferris, and percussionist Mike Koszewski. Together, they merge hip-hop’s narrative power with jazz’s improvisational fire, creating a sound that’s cosmic, theatrical, and unafraid to confront liberation head-on.
White’s decade-spanning background in poetry, theater, and digital production grounds the project in Afrofuturism, queer expression, and community-rooted storytelling. Mr. Chair brings classical fluency and boundary-pushing experimentation—from performing with orchestras and composing for ballet, to collaborating with scientists and visual artists.
In Spectaculous, these four artists create something greater than the sum of their résumés: a fearless, orchestral hip-hop vision built on freedom, precision, and imagination—crafted for audiences who crave music with teeth, heart, and a wide-open future.
