Soon after vocalist Sony Holland's recent performance at the Catalina Jazz Club, concert-promoter Merle Kreibich's phone started ringing with recommendations to book this newcomer to the L.A. jazz scene. Terrence Love of Steamers has been following Sony's career for several years and is also excited to host her debut at his club.

Ms. Holland has relocated to L.A. from San Francisco where she learned the ropes the old-fashioned way. She started out by singing at Pier 39 and then performed extensively at clubs in the Bay Area such as Yoshi's, Pearl's, The Rrazz Room, KRML, the San Francisco & San Jose Jazz Festivals, etc. She went on to play many top jazz venues in the USA and in Asia.

Sony is clear about her reason for moving to Los Angeles. “To get to the next level you have to work with the best musicians and producers and many of them are here in L.A." she says. That her band includes piano maven Theo Saunders and legendary bassist John B. Williams is no fluke. “These guys know how to support a vocalist and they've worked with some of the best," she explains. She met Saunders after hearing his sextet at Vibrato's. Once Saunders checked out Sony's website, they began working together promptly.

Sony has been getting out to the clubs to check out the local scene as much as possible. She effortlessly runs-down some of the artists she's seen since being in town. “To name a few... Barbara Morrison, Ernie Andrews, Houston Person, Jeff Hamilton, Denise Donatelli, Chuck Berghoffer, Josh Nelson, Zane Musa, Carl Saunders, Bob Sheppard, Alan Broadbent, Jack Sheldon, Bill Charlap, Kristen Korb, Francisco Aguabella, Llew Mathews, Bill Henderson, Chris Walden, Jane Monheit... I don't think Angelenos know how lucky they are!"

Seeing other artists is a big plus she says. “The highest tribute for me comes from people who are moved by my music. I understand. I've had very emotional reactions when I've seen artists like Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, etc. A great instrumentalist can wring so much out of a song as well. That's what I'm shooting for every chance I get." She'll have that chance in Culver City and at Steamer's.
