A FESTIVAL OF 21ST CENTURY MUSIC BY COMPOSERS AGE 40 AND UNDER
SONiC—Sounds of a New Century—a brand new festival of 21st century music by more than 100 composers age 40 and under, will take over New York from Friday, October 14 through Saturday, October 22, 2011. Events will range from a day-long marathon to an electronic music night, from a free symphony concert at the World Financial Center Winter Garden to collaborations between emerging choreographers and composers. SONiC concerts will take place at eleven different venues throughout New York.
The National's Bryce Dessner will perform with Aaron Dessner as guitar soloists in Bryce's new orchestral piece, St. Carolyn by the Sea, on Saturday, October 22 at 7pm at the World Financial Center Winter Garden in a FREE concert. St. Carolyn by the Sea is based on American novelist and Beat poet Jack Kerouac's Big Sur and will be performed by American Composers Orchestra (ACO), which commissioned the piece. The premiere is part of SONiC's closing night concert, entitled American Pie.
In addition, as part of SONiC, new music ensemble Either/Or will give the U.S. premiere of a classical work by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. The piece, smear, was composed in 2004 during Greenwood's composer residency with the BBC Concert Orchestra in London, but has never been performed before in the United States. Greenwood wrote smear for two Ondes Martenot (early electronic musical instruments) and chamber ensemble. The premiere will be part of Either/Or's SONiC concert on Monday, October 17 at 7:30pm at Miller Theatre.
Other highlights from SONiC include: Rufus Wainwright's Hope is the Thing with Feathers will be performed by the Young People's Chorus of New York City on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Miller Theatre as part of SONiC's 12-hour Extended Play concert from noon to midnight. Nonesuch pianist and composer Timo Andres' Crashing Through Fences was written for two of the highest-pitched instruments, piccolo and glockenspiel, and will be performed by eighth blackbird on Saturday, October 15 at 7:30pm at Miller Theatre.
