MOJO STILL MOST DEFINITELY WORKING
After having our wig flipped—seriously, our wig is ruined—by Robert Plant and his supremely gifted Band of Joy at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley last night (full review with pics next week), we thought it only right to tip our hat to Sir Bob, his current collaborators and a few tidbits from his earlier solo career. We begin with a double shot of the Band of Joy in action—first, a joyful shuffle through Los Lobos' “Angel Dance" and then a hypnotic reading of Low's “Monkey."
This track stands as one of the high marks of Plant's solo career, a song with the delicacy and mythic vibe of the best Zeppelin slow numbers. However, the official music video below hasn't aged quite as well...
The Honeydrippers project in 1984 was a juicy kiss blown to the early days of rock, and it's evident Plant had a ball showing obvious love to his ancestors.
Perhaps theonly folks perhaps not surprised by the pair up of Plant and country/folk darling Alison Krauss on 2008's Raising Sand were the musicians themselves and producer T Bone Burnett. The results were akin to hearing what might have happened if Plant had made an album with Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny back in the day (that's Sandy on “Battle of Evermore"). Here's a pair of performances with Krauss.
While familiar to many JamBase readers through the Grateful Dead, Plant probably picked up “Morning Dew" from the original single version by Tim Rose. Here a lovely reading with the Strange Sensations band.
For all his clear rock mojo, Plant can knock out a nifty pop nugget from time to time, including this standout from the often overlooked Fate of the Nations album.
