Friday, May 7th the Rick Stone Trio presents an evening of jazz standards and originals at the Bar Next Door. Performing with Rick will be bassist Sean Smith and drummer Sylvia Cuenca. The Bar Next Door is located in the basement of La Lanterna Caffe at 129 MacDougal Street. Shows at 7:00pm and 9:00pm There is a cover charge of $12 per show.

About the Musicians:

Robert Silverstein of 20th Century Guitar calls Rick Stone “one of the finest straight-ahead guitarists on the current NYC jazz scene." Rick's recordings “Blues For Nobody," “Far East" and “Samba de Novembro" have received significant national airplay and critical acclaim. He has performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, the Blue Note, the Smithsonian Institute and Kennedy Center with groups that have included stellar musicians like Kenny Barron, Barry Harris, Ralph Lalama, and Eric Alexander. Rick has also worked as a sideman with blues singer Irene Reid, saxophonist Eric Person, and swing clarinetist Sol Yaged, and teaches jazz guitar at Hofstra University, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and the Jazzmobile Saturday Workshop Program.

Bassist Sean Smith has been part of the international jazz scene for over 20 years. In addition to leading his own quartet, he was a member of the Jacky Terrasson Trio and his work on “Into the Blue" (EMI/Blue Note) was nominated for a Grammy in 2003. Smith has performed with jazz superstars Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Johnny Griffin, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer and Tom Harrell and is the accompanist of choice for singers Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Jimmy Scott and Andy Bey. A prolific composer, Sean wrote the title track of Mark Murphy's Grammy-nominated album “Song for the Geese" on RCA/BMG in 1998 and his music has been recorded by Phil Woods, Bill Charlap, Bill Mays, Leon Parker and Gene Bertoncini, and featured in several films. His recordings as a leader include; “Sean Smith Quartet Live!" (Chiaroscuro), and “Poise" (Ambient). Watch for his new release in the fall of 2010!

An active drummer on the New York jazz scene Sylvia Cuenca shared the bandstand with saxophone legend Joe Henderson for 4 years, touring Europe, Asia and U.S. She also performed with trumpet legend Clark Terry for 17 years, performing jazz cruises, clubs, concerts and festivals. Additionally she's performed and toured with luminaries Billy Taylor, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, Kenny Barron, Ray Drummond, Frank Foster, Michael Brecker, Jon Faddis, Dianne Reeves and many others. She's been Guest Director for the Sisters in Jazz program at Kennedy Center, and Jazz for Teens program at NJPAC, and a clinician for universities throughout U.S. and Europe. Sylvia received two NEA Grants and was a semifinalist at Thelonius Monk International Drum Competition.
