“I first became aware of Daniel while teaching at USC. Bob Mintzer had called and was raving about this guy Dan who had applied for graduate studies. Upon first hearing some of his music, I knew he was special. Things ultimately worked out, and Dan was able to attend school. It was not only good for him, but also for all of our students as I soon found out that he was not only a great musician but also a great mentor as well.

Fast forward to present time when Dan called and asked me if I would craft liner notes for the CD. I did not hesitate for one moment, because before I had even listened to the recording, I knew it would not be a chore. Dan is a great pianist, and upon listening, the first word that comes to mind is clarity. He has a beautiful touch, and it seems as if there are no wasted notes. Everything has its purpose. It's the same with his composition… Nothing ever seems out of place, everything is there for a reason. This is not background music by any means. Yet, there is a certain atmosphere about the recording... one of a calm, transportive nature. Dan's music demands your attention without beating you over the head or intimidating you. It' ever so subtly gets under your skin, and before long, you will find yourself dropping everything and giving it the full, undivided attention, which it deserves.

Hats off to Dan Szabo for making a beautiful, honest and creative musical statement.” — Alan Pasqua, July 2013

Daniel Szabo is a pianist-composer, specializing in jazz, classical music, and film scoring. Currently based in Los Angeles, Szabo grew up in Hungary. He started playing the piano and to compose at the age of 4.

Daniel’s previous two albums of original music were released by Warner Jazz and BMC Records, and featured two phenomenal artists of the current jazz scene: Kurt Rosenwinkel and Chris Potter. Both albums were highly praised by critics internationally.

Daniel Szabo regularly performs at major festivals and clubs both in Europe and the US, his trio represented Eastern Europe in the “Mellon Jazz Up” series hosted by Danilo Perez at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, and his quintet (featuring soloist Chris Potter) performed at NYC’s Jazz Gallery. He has collaborated with John Ellis, John Zorn (Cobra), Rosario Giuliani, Flavio Boltro, Piotr Wojtasik, among many others. Daniel won numerous international competitions, such as the Grand Prize of the City of Paris at the Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Contest in 2006 and the Jas Hennessy Solo Piano Competition in Montreux in 2000.

He has been mentored by renowned musicians such as Danilo Perez, Bob Brookmeyer, and Jerry Bergonzi while he was attended the New England Conservatory, and by Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, and Bruce Broughton at the University of Southern California.

Daniel actively composes for large/chamber ensembles as well as for jazz combos and solo piano while building up a profile in film music and arranging for singers. Besides leading his own bands, he also performs as a session musician with several groups either from the more traditional or radically modern side of jazz and in other fields, such as world or classical music.

A Song From There is the first trio album that Daniel Szabo has released in the US. His original compositions featured on this album are showing multiple influences: the jazz idiom, the works of several classical masters - with a special emphasis on Bela Bartok -, and the hints of Eastern-European folklore are all implemented in his musical language. The phenomenal Peter Erskine and Edwin Livingston join him on this new project.
