Giuseppe Millaci
Giuseppe Millaci, an industrious bassist and the founder of Hypnote Records, who has become a driving force in the belgian jazz scene, gets to showcase his proficiency as both a delicately pertinent accompanist and a singing soloist. On the drums, colourfully expressive and unrelenting, Lieven Venken buoyantly spurs on electrifying riffs and fiery solos from the very versatile but instantly recognisable Manu Codjia, now a household name of European jazz.

Three exceptional musicians, from different backgrounds meeting at the crossroads of jazz and rock for this captivating masterpiece of finesse and character.

A world frozen by the pandemic brought this trio and its first offering Phases into existence from the rich artistic reservoir that is Belgium's capital, Brussels.

From the opening track, Giuseppe Millaci’s deep tone and Lieven Venken’s assertive feel carry the raw energy and dynamics of Manu Codjia’s guitar, from the evanescent to the incandescent. Taking us on a dreamlike journey to the depths of their realm, somewhere beyond jazz and rock. The album contains two standards and some original compositions. “Phases I," “II" and “III" are the result of the trio’s extensive flow improvisations, giving us a special glimpse into the creative process of these fine musicians as they communicate and discover common ground.

Phases is an ode to freedom, a smooth and poetic maiden voyage, joyful, contemplative, sensitive, human. A reminder that sometimes, good things come out of hard times.
