SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Jazz announced today the performing artists for the 19th Annual Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival, presented by Southwest Airlines. The festival is scheduled for Aug. 8-10 and will feature over one hundred bands comprising over 1,000 musicians on 10 stages in downtown San Jose. Headlining performers include David Sanborn, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Summit and Zakir Hussain, the Bill Holman Orchestra, James Hunter, and John Densmore, former drummer of The Doors.
This festival brings together international and local favorites, legends and rising stars to the capital of Silicon Valley and offers all flavors of jazz including Latin, blues, salsa, R&B, electronica and more. Jazz is the basis for most of the popular music of today and the Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival showcases that breadth," said Geoff Roach, Executive Director of San Jose Jazz. San Jose Jazz Festival Featured Performers
David Sanborn has created a body of work that spans the genres of rock 'n' roll, R&B, pop and jazz. He is a naturally gifted performer whose music has inspired countless other musicians. Sanborn has helped defined the saxophone's modern sound while influencing a new generation of music. Sanborn will be leading a 12 piece band performing the music of Ray Charles and Hank Crawford.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was originally formed in Los Angeles in 1989. Their music concentrates on the sound of 1940s and '50s swing played in clubs and lounges during their early years. The band features its leader Scott Morris as lead vocals and guitar, Kurt Sodergren on drums, Dirk Shumaker on string bass, Andy Rowley on saxophone, Glen Marhevka on trumpet, Karl Hunter on saxophones and clarinet, and Joshua Levy on piano.
Zakir Hussain is a remarkable percussionist. He has collaborated to create fusion works with many western and Indian artists, most notably with The Beatles. In 1988, he became the youngest percussionist to ever be awarded the title of Padma Shri, an award given by the Government of India to recognize an individual's distinguished contribution to a various sphere of activity, which includes the arts among others. He has recorded and performed with artists as diverse as George Harrison, Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar, Aashish Khan, Vasant Rai, Imrat Khan, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce and more.
Bill Holman is an American songwriter, conductor, composer and arranger, and saxophonist. Although he has performed and recorded as a tenor saxophonist, Holman is best known as one of the finest arrangers in jazz history. He has provided charts for Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band, and many others. Over the years, Holman has also led the Bill Holman Orchestra whose 1997 recording Brilliant Corners/The Music of Thelonious Monk" won awarded a Grammy. Holman's orchestra includes the movers and shakers of the Los Angeles jazz scene including Carl Saunders, Pete Christlieb, Andy Martin, Ron Stout, Lanny Morgan, Christian Jacob and others.
James Hunter is a native of Colchester, England. He fell in love with Soul and R&B music early on and is now the extraordinary British singer who the New York Time's says possesses a tight, slithery soul groove" and a sweet growl." He will be making his Hear Music label debut on Jun. 10 with the release of The Hard Way.
Based in the Mission District of San Francisco, the Shotgun Wedding Hip Hop Symphony has garnered a loyal following of Hip Hop and Jazz enthusiasts. By taking advantage of modern technology, they use electronic sampling devices to layer their sound, an original technique mastered by the band.
The festival will kick off on Aug. 2 with a special event fundraiser at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in downtown San Jose. The Cuban themed gala, Havana Nights" event will feature a cocktail reception with a silent auction, dinner and dancing.
