Pandora Preferred in Online Music Services

When it comes to online music services, consumers are most familiar with AOL Music, but in terms of actual usage, Pandora gets the most play, according to a Tuesday report from the NPD Group.

Of the 4,051 people polled by NPD in the first quarter of 2009, about 30 percent were aware of AOL Music, followed by MySpace Music at 25 percent, Yahoo Launchcast with 21 percent, and Pandora at 20 percent.

When it comes to actually listening to music, however, the majority--or 41 percent--headed to Pandora. MySpace Music and imeem.com tied for second place at 33 percent, followed by Slacker with 17 percent and AOL Music at 13 percent.

“Despite leading in awareness, AOL was not as successful as other sites at getting consumers to use their music service, which either suggests consumers tried it and aren't satisfied with the offering, or that AOL simply needs to do a more compelling job getting consumers to their music pages," NPD Group said in a statement. “MySpaceMusic has a higher conversion rate than AOL, which could help the MySpace franchise provide value and differentiation for entertainment-engaged consumers."
