Nonesuch Records Hires Slim Moon as Senior Director of A&R
Moon comes to Nonesuch after founding highly respected Pacific Northwest independent label Kill Rock Stars, which he has run since 1991
Nonesuch Records announces the hiring of its first dedicated A&R staff member, Slim Moon, formerly of Kill Rock Stars. Moon, who will come to Nonesuch in the late fall of 2006, will be the label's senior director of A&R. In this position, Moon will work with Nonesuch President Bob Hurwitz and Senior Vice President David Bither in their continued goal of bringing unique musicians of all genres to the label.
Hurwitz said, “This is an auspicious occasion: it is the first time in the 40-year history of the company that we've hired someone specifically to do A&R. We feel Slim has accomplished many great things at Kill Rock Stars, and look forward to having him help Nonesuch grow and evolve musically over the next several years."
Moon founded the independent record label Kill Rock Stars in Olympia, WA in 1991. It quickly earned respect for its punk rock and rock and roll releases by artists such as Bikini Kill, Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, and the Decemberists. The label is adamant in its belief that releasing meaningful music should be the primary goal, rather than profit. Moon's partner at Kill Rock Stars, Dr. Portia Sabin, will take over as head of that label's operations.
“We came to know Slim over the past year, as he began to manage artists in addition to running his label. We admire his accomplishments at Kill Rock Stars--creating and sustaining, over fifteen years, an independent label that not only discovered wonderful artists but also stayed in business without sacrificing its ambitions and integrity. We continue to find all kinds of musical reasons for optimism and believe that Slim coming to Nonesuch will help to create an even better home for the artists with whom we work," said Bither.
Moon adds “This is a dream come true for me. I had admired Nonesuch for a long time, but after working with them for a year, I came to realize that they are the real deal--a place that nurtures the creativity of some of the world's most important artists and makes the world a better place for us all. The opportunity to join them was a chance I could not pass up. I look forward to this new chapter in my own life, as well as the opportunity to contribute to the legacy of one of the last great old-school record labels."
Nonesuch Records was founded as a classical label in 1964 by Elektra Records executive Jac Holzman. It expanded into the world music field in 1967 with its legendary Explorer series, featuring more than one hundred titles. Current artists on the label also include John Adams, the Black Keys, David Byrne, Shawn Colvin, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Gipsy Kings, Adam Guettel, Emmylou Harris, Kronos Quartet, k.d. lang, Audra McDonald, the Magnetic Fields/Stephin Merritt, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Youssou N'Dour, Randy Newman, Joshua Redman, Steve Reich, Stephen Sondheim, Laura Veirs, Caetano Veloso and Wilco. Nonesuch also releases the recordings of the London-based World Circuit label in North America.
