Verizon FiOS customers are about to get another speed boost. No, it won't be from the fiber pipe coming into their homes, but through the coaxial cables already snaking through their walls and into the FiOS set-top boxes throughout their homes.
According to releases from both Verizon and Actiontec, the broadband service is set to roll out a new generation of gateway routers that will increase throughput speeds on coax cables from 75 MBps to 175 MBps. According to Verizon, the new routers, a MI424-WR from Actiontec and the UltraLine Series 3 model 9100 by Westell, will also add support for up to four simultaneous wireless networks.
Most of the speed boost, however, will be devoted to the coax-based MoCA network, which means that the wireless G networks will still max out at 54 MBps, and wired Ethernet networks will deliver roughly 100 MBps. A spokesman for Verizon said that “LAN side Ethernet will likely go to 1Gbps at some point." On the other hand, media-sharing FiOS HD DVRs could conceivable do a better job showing content stored on other in-home boxes.
