"This year's Montreux Jazz Festival, which was set to take place from July 3 to 18, has been cancelled" announced Press Officer Marc Zendrini.

Montreux Jazz Festival has regretfully announced that this year's event, which was due to be held between July 3—18th 2020, will not take place. The program planned for this summer will be partly carried over to next year's Festival, which will take place from July 2—17 2021.

The Swiss Federal Council announced that it would be gradually easing some of the protective measures against the coronavirus, still keeping the majority of the hygiene and social distancing measures in place. It would be impossible to hold an event on the scale of Montreux Jazz Festival in July. Last year, the extensive festival presented live music on twelve stages throughout three weeks for a quarter of a million guests, and had a budget of $28 million (Read the 18th July 2019 All About Jazz article).

“The health and safety of everybody takes precedence over all other considerations," stated Zendrini.

This is the first time the Festival has had to be cancelled in its 53-year history of bringing people together and staging legendary musical performances. “Right up until the very last moment, everyone in the Festival team was holding out the hope that we might be able to present some more exceptional music this year. It's very hard to imagine a summer in Montreux without the Jazz Festival. Everyone in Montreux will miss seeing our loyal festival-goers—until we meet in 2021." said Zendrini
