Acclaimed Mandolinist Will Perform with Esteemed and Always Progressive Chamber Music Group For Five Nights Beginning November 19
Mike Marshall has always been adept at transcending the narrow restraints of gender classification throughout his more-than-25 year-long career. From his early work with the David Grisman Quintet in the mid-1980s, through his collaborations with fiddler Darol Anger, bluegrass/newgrass artists such as Chris Thile and his own Psychograss, in the course of his extensive explorations into Brazilian choro music, and his most recent foray into classical work with fellow mandolin virtuoso Caterina Lichtenberg, Marshall has continued to bring a sparkling and buoyant perspective to every musical journey on which he has set out.
It should come as little surprise, then, that Marshall will perform with the Turtle Island String Quartet for a series of shows beginning on November 19 in Santa Fe and concluding in San Francsico on December 10.
Winner of the 2006 and most recently, the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles. The group's latest release, Have You Ever Been...., finds them blurring the boundaries between rock and jazz, plying their inventive improvisations of songs by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, John McLaughlin and the Billy Roberts tune made popular by the Byrds, “Hey Joe."
Marshall, who played mandocello on Have You Ever Been....can trace his relationship with Turtle Island to Darol Anger, who founded the band with violinist David Balakrishnan and cellist Mark Summer in 1985. His tour with Turtle Island falls in the midst of an incredibly industrious year for Marshall. His CD with classical mandolin player Caterina Lichtenberg, titled simply Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg, was lauded by Allmusic. com as “ delightful, beautifully turned out, and thoughtful." His most recent CD, just released on October 19, is the retrospective, Mike Marshall: An Adventure 1999-2009, an anthology of Marshall's work from the nine CDs he's released on his Adventure Music label.
