On the nominated disc, Solal is heard giving playful words of caution to the excited crowd. Tonight is a very important night because we are recording the show, so I have to be good. And you have to be good, too, because you'll be on tape."
Solal is always more than good, as this fourth recording of his on the Italian label, CAM Jazz, makes plain. Recorded on October 12, 2007, he made history that night as the first artist recorded solo on piano in the venerable club, one of the world's temples of jazz. He also had fun in celebration of his 80th birthday and only his third engagement in New York City in the past 44 years.
Now 82, Solal just received his second Grammy Award nomination, this one in the Best Improvised Jazz Solo category for On Green Dolphin Street." His nominated peers are Terence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove, Miguel Zenon and Gerald Clayton. The category winner of this 52nd Annual Grammy Awards will be named on Sunday, January 31, when the ceremony is telecast nationwide.
