Markham, ON - The Markham Jazz Festival (MJF) is proud to announce the acts for the Varley Art Gallery Patio for this years' 'The World of Jazz' festival.
The Varley Art Gallery is located on Main Street in Unionville. Named after one of Canada's foremost portrait artists, Frederick A. Varley, the gallery features a permanent collection as well as works by fellow members of Canada's famed Group of Seven.
Markham Gang with Chase Sanborn:
The Markham Gang - a jazz combo made up of local music educators - is pleased to share the stage with Chase Sanborn, trumpeter and educator extraordinaire. He is a graduate of Berklee College in Boston and a former member of the Ray Charles Orchestra. He has released two acclaimed CDs over the past few years and has established himself as an important trumpet and jazz educator with his Brass Tactics and Jazz Tactics books and DVDs.

Richard Whiteman Trio:
Performing great straight-ahead jazz, the Richard Whiteman Trio features Whiteman on piano, and young jazz starts Brandi Disterheft on bass and Sly Juhas on drums. Richard Whiteman currently leads combos at Humber College and York University; Brandi and Sly are both Humber College graduates who have already played with some of the top musicians in Toronto.

Michael Herring's Vertigo:
Michael Herring, a graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz Performance program, has performed with jazz, funk, folk and reggae ensembles. He has toured throughout Canada and in Europe, Korea, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. Vertigo is a sextet featuring Michael's own compositions and the talents of such musicians as Quinsin Nachoff, William Carn and Don Scott.

Runcible Spoon:
One of Toronto's most unique jazz ensembles, Runcible Spoon features clarinet, piano, viola, cello and bass. The ensemble's members have a wide variety of musical experience - from jazz to classical to contemporary - and together they perform a mixture of jazz, folk, country and klezmer.

Janelle Monique:
Representing the next generation of jazz stars, Janelle Monique has a voice that will leave you mesmerized. She has performed on her own or with a variety of ensembles including the BABES IN JAZZ LAND presented by Jaymz Bee at festivals such as the Barrie, Oshawa, Montreal and Toronto jazz festivals, and together with her band-mates she presents jazz with strong Latin, soul and R&B influences.

Project Phoenix:
And, finally, to end the festival, some funk, soul and R&B. Project Phoenix is a ten-piece band that performs some of the best music ever written, with a repertoire that includes Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, the Blues Brothers and more.
