Malta Jazz Festival 2002

July 19 - 21, 2002 - Malta Jazz has always explored a variety of styles and continents in its efforts to satisfy the purist, the enthusiast and the novice to the jazz scene. And this year is no exception. In its traditional spirit of cultural diversity, creativity and innovation, the programme features a selection of music from around the world.

The line up ranges from the smooth acoustic sounds of Oregon and Bobby Hutcherson to the adventurous stylings of Arto Tuncboyaciyan and Don Byron. A special attraction for piano fans, this year's festival presents various musical genres, with McCoy Tyner, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Michel Camilo, Michele Giro and Malta's own Paul Giordimaina. And for vocalists, there's the inspiring young talent of Diane Nalini, and the extraordinary guitar and soulful voice of husband and wife duo Tuck & Patti.

What makes Malta Jazz all the more special is its venue - one of the most spectacular locations of all jazz festivals. The festival is held right by the ancient Grand Harbour, below the floodlit bastions of Malta's baroque capital Valletta. Built by the Knights of St John in the late 16th century, Valletta today is a Unesco World Heritage City. All in all, a perfect location for three sultry evenings under a Mediterranean night sky.

Malta Jazz is also a great bargain at just under $40 for the three evenings - a price Down Beat Jazz magazine described a few year's back as 'crazy'! If you're heading to the Mediterranean this summer, try to make Malta Jazz a date. As one of the few non-profit-making festivals around, it has a very special atmosphere; one that remains perhaps true to the spirit of the jazz genre.
