The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 seasons of the Swingin' with the CJO and Inside Track series. Under the direction of world-renowned band leader and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, continues to break new ground while honoring the rich heritage of Americas classical music jazz. With season after season of inspiring, uplifting performances, the CJO is making audiences stand up and shout for more!
The Swingin' with the CJO season promises to be one of our best ever including unforgettable performances from accomplished jazz guitarist and former Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks (October 26-30, 2011); UK vocal sensation Helen Welch in our annual holiday spectacular (November 30-December 4, 2011); BalletMet and WOSU Public Media in a brand new bicentennial collaboration, Jazz Moves ColumbUS," celebrating life in Columbus through a synthesis of music, movement and imagery (February 2-12, 2012); Emmy Award-winning choreographer, tap dancer and Tony nominee Ted Louis Levy in A Night at the Cotton Club" (March 14-18, 2012); and the soulful vocals of emerging artist Ty Taylor in R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: The Legends of Soul" (April 11-15, 2012).
The Inside Track series gives music lovers from all walks of life the chance to stretch their ears and stretch themselves. Our small-ensemble concert Don't Listen To This!" (September 23-24, 2011), will showcase some of the finest music ever writtenthat you weren't supposed to hear! You'll be amazed by the stories behind these banned" songs and learn of their rise into mainstream American culture. In January, the CJO salutes the genius of Ray Charles with Hit the Road, Jack" (January 27-28, 2012) featuring a group of his alumni including Columbus' own Roger Hines and Sarah Morrow. The Jazz Arts Group will also unveil the WORLD PREMIERE of the commission Beyond the Blackberry Patch" (March 2-3, 2012) by acclaimed trombonist and composer Wycliffe Gordon written for ten musicians to tell the story of the historic King-Lincoln District. Finally, the CJO will join with the most inspiring choir in Columbus, The Harmony Project, to bring you an evening of uplifting, joyous, highly engaging music (May 18-19, 2012). NEA Jazz Master David Liebman and his quartet will also perform at Vonn's Jazz Lounge on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 as a special non-subscription addition to the Inside Track season.
