Jam Packed Calendar Includes Jazz Picnic & BBQ in Phoenix Civic Space, Bobby Broom & The Thelonious Monk Institute, and Centennial Celebration of the Legendary Billy Strayhorn
Phoenix, AZ: April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and The Nash joins celebrations around the world with a jam packed calendar of events to showcase the best of America's original art form. Highlights include a free concert in the Phoenix Civic Space on April 12th, workshops, classes and student Master classes with performances including Thelonious Monk Institute, and an all-out centennial celebration for Billy Strayhorn on April 30th, International Jazz Day.
The Nash hosts mainstream and contemporary jazz concerts each weekend, with Sunday Jam Sessions each Sunday evening, and the Last Friday Late Night Jam on the last Friday of the month.
The Nash is located at 110 E. Roosevelt St on Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix.

ASU jazz instructor Dr. Jeffrey Libman will examine the lives and music of a selection of great tenor saxophonists. The class is intended for jazz aficionados and those who would like to learn more about jazz. Instruments not required! The class will consist primarily of active listening to exemplary recordings with interspersed guided discussion. Come learn about jazz masters such as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and John Coltrane.

This quartet is comprised of major artists on the jazz scene, the incredible Rebecca Kilgore teams with Dave Tull, Randy Porter and Tom Wakeling for one night only at The Nash. One of America's leading song stylists, Rebecca has over 40 recordings to her credit and is a frequent collaborator with Michael Feinstein, performing at jazz festivals and venues around the globe. Randy Porter. hailed by Downbeat Magazine for a “confidence that allows the music to breathe deeply," has an extensive career touring with Charles McPherson while Tom Wakeling's bass versatility has supported a wide range of jazz artists from Arturo Sandoval to Herb Geller. For twenty-five years Dave Tull has made a name for himself as a world-class jazz drummer and is recently being recognized as one of the country's finest jazz vocalists. He has has toured the world since 2000 as drummer and lead vocalist for Chuck Mangione and joins Rebecca, Dave and Tom for this amazing concert of jazz standards.

Bob Ravenscroft - piano/keyboards, Dwight Kilian - bass, Rob Moore - drums Bob Ravenscroft, the widely-acclaimed jazz keyboardist and composer, is all about a lifelong pursuit of making great jazz music and exploring new ground. The Arizona Republic recently named his trio “Best Jazz Group." Fred Forney-trumpet, Russ Schmidt-piano, Chris Finet-bass, Dom Moio-drums Fred Forney has played with a long list of who's who in the music word, from Tony Bennett to Dionne Warwick, toured with Bobby Caldwell and played with David Friesen, Bob Minzter, Ernie Watts and other jazz greats, in addition to his tenure as jazz faculty at Mesa Community College.

Spend a day in the park as The Nash and ASU Jazz host the Jazz Picnic and BBQ at Phoenix Civic Space in the heart of downtown Phoenix Celebrating April as International Jazz Month, food trucks will be on hand for the public to grab a bite to eat and relax as the best of Phoenix jazz performs on the main stage in the park. The day kicks off with Dmitri Matheny Group and his popular program for families, “Hot Dogs & Jazz" followed by the best jazz performed by leading professional and “young lion" musicians from ASU and The Nash. The all-day Jazz Picnic will be topped off with Mike Kocour and the Soul Advocates, one of the best jazz combos in the Valley. Danny Long - piano/vocals, Tony Vacca - sax, Neil Seroka - bass Danny Long headlined in Chicago, toured nationally, released an album on Capitol Records and inhabited the showrooms of Las Vegas prior to moving to Phoenix in 1980. He draws his musical repertoire primarily from the Great American Songbook, interpreting tunes by such masters as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and Rodgers and Hart.

The Thelonious Monk Institute annually provides combos from selected public performing arts magnet high schools around the country who perform with nationally acclaimed guest artists on performance tours. The Thelonious Monk Institute combo comes to The Nash as part of its tour, led by the pre-eminent guitarist Bobby Broom, who spent years as an elite sideman with the likes of Sonny Rollins, Stanley Turrentine, and Dr. John. The combo will be joined by Charenee Wade, a notable singer, composer, arranger and educator who performs internationally and in NYC at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the legendary Smalls and the Zinc Bar in NYC. This will be a unique experience to hear these veteran jazz artists perform with the best young musicians in the country, selected by the acclaimed Institute.

House of Stairs is a jazz-based collective that derive from funk, soul and pop influences to create a distinct progressive soundscape. Inspired by the visual innovations of M.C. Escher, House of Stairs approaches composition and performance in a parallel sense, exploring multi-faceted interactions between harmony, meter and lyrics that are both compelling and imaginative.
The Nash's own 'rising star' Holly Pyle has been up and coming in the valley music scene, contributing to a wide variety of projects from a hip hop group called The Stakes, to a solo and duo vocal looping project, as well as being featured at this year's Jazz in AZ Jazz Divas concert.

Will Goble - bass, Brice Winston - sax, Mike Kocour - piano, Dave Potter - drums Will Goble is steadily carving out a unique space for himself as a bassist and bandleader. Driven by a genuine love for group interaction and a positive exchange with audiences, he leads his own bands and supports other musicians with equal energy and enthusiasm. His first album as a leader Some Stories Tells No Lies, features his own trio joined by trumpeter Marcus Printup and saxophonist Chad Eby, for originals from Will, drummer Dave Potter and pianist Austin Johnson, as well as compositions by Thelonious Monk and bassist Robert Hurst, among others. Will regularly tours and records with the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet and performs and teaches regularly here in Phoenix, and beyond.

For International Jazz Day, The Nash joins centennial events occurring all around the globe to celebratethe legendary Billy Strayhorn. The pianist, arranger and composer and long-time collaborator with Duke Ellington, Strayhorn is best known for his classics, “Lush Life," “Take The 'A' Train" and “Chelsea Bridge". The 20 piece Sonoran Serenade Big Band, led by Mike Crotty, performs the best of Strayhorn for an all-out, blow-out, Big Band BASH for the grand finale of April's festivities. ABOUT THE NASH
The Nash was named for the great jazz drummer Lewis Nash, described by Ira Gitler of The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz as “Perhaps the most talented drummer of his generation." Nash grew up in south Phoenix and by the early age of 10 years old began playing drums. At age 21 he moved to New York City, where he became the drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists. His impressive discography (over 300 recordings) includes projects with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Benny Carter, Hank Jones and John Lewis, as well as new jazz stars Diana Krall, Joe Lovano and Roy Hargrove. Demonstrating his stylistic diversity, Nash is also featured on recordings by Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson, Kenny Rankin, Melissa Manchester and George Michael.
Located on the corner of 1st Street and Roosevelt on Roosevelt Row, The Nash has become the center for Jazz in the Valley with musicians and bands from a variety of styles featured at the venue each weekend. The general public is welcome to BYOB for any show except First Fridays. Limit 750ml bottle of wine per couple, or two beers per person. Nominal corkage fee will be charged.

Danny Long - piano/vocals, Tony Vacca - sax, Neil Seroka - bass Danny Long headlined in Chicago, toured nationally, released an album on Capitol Records and inhabited the showrooms of Las Vegas prior to moving to Phoenix in 1980. He draws his musical repertoire primarily from the Great American Songbook, interpreting tunes by such masters as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington and Rodgers and Hart.

The Thelonious Monk Institute annually provides combos from selected public performing arts magnet high schools around the country who perform with nationally acclaimed guest artists on performance tours. The Thelonious Monk Institute combo comes to The Nash as part of its tour, led by the pre-eminent guitarist Bobby Broom, who spent years as an elite sideman with the likes of Sonny Rollins, Stanley Turrentine, and Dr. John. The combo will be joined by Charenee Wade, a notable singer, composer, arranger and educator who performs internationally and in NYC at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the legendary Smalls and the Zinc Bar in NYC. This will be a unique experience to hear these veteran jazz artists perform with the best young musicians in the country, selected by the acclaimed Institute.

House of Stairs is a jazz-based collective that derive from funk, soul and pop influences to create a distinct progressive soundscape. Inspired by the visual innovations of M.C. Escher, House of Stairs approaches composition and performance in a parallel sense, exploring multi-faceted interactions between harmony, meter and lyrics that are both compelling and imaginative.
The Nash's own 'rising star' Holly Pyle has been up and coming in the valley music scene, contributing to a wide variety of projects from a hip hop group called The Stakes, to a solo and duo vocal looping project, as well as being featured at this year's Jazz in AZ Jazz Divas concert.

These jam sessions give serious up-and-coming jazz musicians the ability to play with more experienced players and mentors and the public the ability to enjoy spontaneous high-level jazz performances with an “insider's" feel.

Will Goble - bass, Brice Winston - sax, Mike Kocour - piano, Dave Potter - drums Will Goble is steadily carving out a unique space for himself as a bassist and bandleader. Driven by a genuine love for group interaction and a positive exchange with audiences, he leads his own bands and supports other musicians with equal energy and enthusiasm. His first album as a leader Some Stories Tells No Lies, features his own trio joined by trumpeter Marcus Printup and saxophonist Chad Eby, for originals from Will, drummer Dave Potter and pianist Austin Johnson, as well as compositions by Thelonious Monk and bassist Robert Hurst, among others. Will regularly tours and records with the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet and performs and teaches regularly here in Phoenix, and beyond.

For International Jazz Day, The Nash joins centennial events occurring all around the globe to celebratethe legendary Billy Strayhorn. The pianist, arranger and composer and long-time collaborator with Duke Ellington, Strayhorn is best known for his classics, “Lush Life," “Take The 'A' Train" and “Chelsea Bridge". The 20 piece Sonoran Serenade Big Band, led by Mike Crotty, performs the best of Strayhorn for an all-out, blow-out, Big Band BASH for the grand finale of April's festivities. ABOUT THE NASH
The Nash was named for the great jazz drummer Lewis Nash, described by Ira Gitler of The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz as “Perhaps the most talented drummer of his generation." Nash grew up in south Phoenix and by the early age of 10 years old began playing drums. At age 21 he moved to New York City, where he became the drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists. His impressive discography (over 300 recordings) includes projects with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Benny Carter, Hank Jones and John Lewis, as well as new jazz stars Diana Krall, Joe Lovano and Roy Hargrove. Demonstrating his stylistic diversity, Nash is also featured on recordings by Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson, Kenny Rankin, Melissa Manchester and George Michael.
Located on the corner of 1st Street and Roosevelt on Roosevelt Row, The Nash has become the center for Jazz in the Valley with musicians and bands from a variety of styles featured at the venue each weekend. The general public is welcome to BYOB for any show except First Fridays. Limit 750ml bottle of wine per couple, or two beers per person. Nominal corkage fee will be charged.
