On October 7, 2022, while performing at Pavilon République in Toulouse, France, the saxophonist, composer, arranger and producer Jason Yarde, a leading light of British progressive jazz for twenty years, suffered a massive stroke on stage.

Fortunately, paramedics were at the gig. They administered first aid and got Jason to hospital without delay. A bleed was found on his brain and he was operated on. It is hoped that this prompt action will enable Jason to return to Britain shortly. In November 2020, he underwent heart surgery, from which he made a full recovery.

Says Jason’s brother James: “When he returns, Jason will need to focus on his rehabilitation and not worry about how to pay for what will be substantial costs including any necessary ongoing physiotherapy, massage therapy, accommodation and living costs.

“Big bro needs a rest. Knowing him, he’ll likely want to dust himself off quickly and busy himself in various ways even after this, but he now needs all of our help to make sure he does exactly the opposite for a while. With suitable recovery plans and care in place we can rightfully aim to get him back to full health and making more world-class contributions as a musician, composer, arranger, father and brother.”

A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to support Jason’s medical and living needs. All About Jazz readers who wish to make a donation can visit his GoFundMe page where updates on his progress will be posted.

A network of Jason’s friends and family are also arranging benefit gigs and events to support the fundraising efforts, including one on November 14, 2022 at London’s 606 Club.
