Trumpeter Jason Palmer and his Jazz Collective will be performing at Wally's Jazz Cafe every Friday and Saturday evening starting at 9:30pm. Wally's Cafe is located in Boston's south end on the corner of Mass Ave and Columbus Ave. 21+, no cover. The Jason Palmer trio will also host a jam session every Sunday afternoon at Wally's beginning at 4:00pm and concluding at 7:30pm.
Jazz trumpeter Jason Palmer has been playing the trumpet for the past thirteen years. Most recently, Mr. Palmer was a finalist in the 2003 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Solo Trumpet Competition held in Orlando, Fl. Jason, a High Point, North Carolina native (was raised on the same block saxophonist John Coltrane grew up on), has been fortunate to share the stage with Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Lewis Nash, Cyrus Chestnut, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller and Tim Warfield.
He has performed at various jazz venues such as Scullers Jazz Club,the Regattabar, Tremont Theatre, Les Zygomates, Limbo, Bob the Chefs, the Wonderbar, The Good Life, as well as City Hall Plaza. Along with weekly engagements at the historical Wallys Cafe, Jason has performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the Mablehead Jazz Festival, the Highland Jazz Festival, Hartford Jazz Festival, the Springfield Jazz Festival, as well as festivals in Paris and Coulmmiers, France and Salamanca, Spain.
His quintet has also performed live on WGBH Eric in the Evening, hosted by Eric Jackson. While attending the Greensboro Music Academy in North Carolina, he was awarded the best jazz soloist prize at the North Carolina Central University Jazz Festival in 1996 and 1997. He later went on to study at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was able to study with artists such as Danilo Perez, George Russell, Jerry Bergonzi, John McNeil, Bob Brookmeyer, and Cecil McBee. Jason was a resident at the 2000 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at Aspen Snowmass in Aspen, CO, the 2003 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program, as well as the 2003 Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago.
While attending these programs, he was able to study and perform with jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Brian Blade, Christian McBride, Jimmy Smith, James Moody, Rufus Reid, Winard Harper, and Fred Wesley. As a teacher, Jason serves on the trumpet faculty at the Mile High Jazz Camp in Boulder, Co, as well as the trumpet faculty in the Prep. Division at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. His future plans include a fall European tour with Blue Note recording artist Greg Osby as well as a debut recording on Freshsound records.
