Official opening in 4 days!

Only five days remain before the opening of the 30th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, which will be held from Tuesday, June 30 to Sunday, July 12, 2009!

The press room-the heart of the Festival

New this year, the Festival press room is located in the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, 305 Ste. Catherine St. West. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 26, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 29, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day from June 30 to July 12, it’s the meeting point for artists, agents, record label representatives and media. Our entire press and communications team is happy to welcome you! Media representatives please note that the press room can now be reached at 514 288-5299.

Inauguration of L’Astral in the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan with Oliver Jones

On June 30, we’ll unwrap the most beautiful gift of this 30th edition, the Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, a year-round HQ for jazz, a nerve centre for the Festival-where you’ll now find the Festival pressroom-and an important landmark for the Quartier des spectacles. And inside, yet another jewel: L’Astral, sponsored by Astral Media, an ideal new venue for live concerts and their dissemination, offering a full slate of summer festival programming before opening its regular programming in September. Finally, after 30 years, the Festival finally has a home and can offer activities all year long!

With 350 seating capacity in the cabaret format and 600 capacity standing, a configuration offering intimacy and optimum sight lines, a painstaking acoustic, and an ideal location (corner of Ste. Catherine Street and the new Place des Festivals), L’Astral is guaranteed to be a major destination spot in the Quartier des spectacles. Whether it’s the balcony arcing perfectly around the stage, the stage set in the heart of the crowd, or the fact that no spectator will be more than 15 metres from the artists, it’s hard to imagine a better setting for maximum enjoyment of this music we all love! We will inaugurate the new room on Monday, June 29, with a performance by the great Montreal pianist Oliver Jones, featuring special guests Ranee Lee and Chet Doxas, a concert that will also be offered to the public as part of the opening of the 30th edition of the Festival, at 6 p.m. on June 30.

Launch of Nos stars clèbrent le jazz à Montreal in collaboration with Bell

The finest artists on the Quebec cultural scene breathe new life into the great jazz standards on Nos stars clèbrent le jazz à Montral, the album-event of the 30th anniversary of the Festival International de Jazz de Montral. A crew of artists including Cline Dion, Cœur de pirate, Daniel Lavoie, ric Lapointe, Florence K, Garou, Ginette Reno, Isabelle Boulay, Jean Leloup, Marie-laine Thibert, Marie-Mai, Michel Rivard and Stphanie Lapointe selected a favourite jazz song with particular personal relevance, each of them marvelously arranged and produced by Daniel Thouin. Our star singers are joined by such renowned soloists as Yannick Rieu, Ben Charest, Oliver Jones, Daniel Thouin and Jordan Officer, enhancing the songs with their respective talents.

June 29, 5 p.m. | SIMM-GM Pavilion (corner De Bleury St. and De Maisonneuve Blvd.) |

With Cœur de pirate, Florence K, Stphanie Lapointe, Marie-laine Thibert, Michel Rivard and more.

Corno in the Galerie

For an edition as important as this 30th, the Festival struck a high note by inviting internationally renowned Qubcois artist Corno, whose sublime and dynamic Face for Jazz brings a new spectrum of colour to the music. The Galerie du Festival will also present numbered and signed silkscreens taken from Chœur du monde, the official poster by Yves Archambault, our artist in residence for over 20 years. However, the Galerie will also undergo its own major change when, in September, it moves into the new Maison du Festival Rio Tinto Alcan, where it will remain open all year ‘round.

The vernissage will be held on June 29 at 5 p.m. in the Galerie du Festival (under the tent in the Place des Festivals, Balmoral St., corner De Maisonneuve Blvd.), with Corno present.

Pre-opening concert: Gary Burton Quartet Revisited
with Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Antonio Sanchez!

On Friday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m., in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts, the pre-opening concert of the 30th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, featuring the Gary Burton Quartet Revisited with Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Antonio Sanchez, will sate the appetites of jazz fans who can’t wait for the official opening of the festivities! While groups combining major jazz names come and go, few possess the intimate musical bond of this historic quartet led by vibraphonist Gary Burton. This innovative jazzman was a major force behind the ascension of jazz fusion and the jazz duo format so popular today. He welcomes bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Antonio Sanchez, as well as guitarist Pat Metheny-not simply one of the most beloved of Festival veterans, but one of the most important players in the history of this Festival, honouring us once again with his presence in this exceptional 30th anniversary pre-opening concert!
