By Ted O'Reilly Jim Galloway (born James Braidie Galloway July 28, 1936 in Kilwinning, Scotland) died peacefully at home on December 30, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. An internationally renowned jazz musician, one of the few specializing on the soprano sax (along with alto, tenor, baritone and occasional clarinet), Jim lived a full life doing what he loved most. Listening to post-war American Armed Forces Radio, the young man discovered jazz music, and soon was playing clarinet and alto saxophone ...

Though the exact cause of death has yet to be disclosed, Golub, a Copley Township native, had been suffering from a rare disease called progressive supranuclear palsy. Passings: DeFranco, Benford, Belletto

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

The past seven days have seen the deaths of three musicians who came to prominence as young men and had long careers in the swing, bebop and post-bop eras. Buddy DeFranco, who in the 1940s was the first to successfully adapt the clarinet to the complexities of bebop, died the day before Christmas at age 91. In recent years he and his wife Joyce lived in Panama City, Florida. DeFranco was the principal influence on virtually every major clarinetist who ...

Loss Of A Quiet Giant: Will Connell 1938-2014

Loss Of A Quiet Giant: Will Connell 1938-2014

Source: John Pietaro

By John Pietaro I was heartily saddened by the sudden unexpected phone call: downtown’s unsung hero of Free Jazz, Will Connell, Jr., was hospitalized and non-responsive. Immediately the jazz and new music community rallied and the outpouring of love for Will was apparent. We’d all been preparing for his big moment at the front of the stage, his week-long residency at the Stone, set to occur in December. None of this made sense yet one day later, November 19, the ...

I was saddened to learn on the road that Buddy Catlett died yesterday. I remember him looking as he does in this photograph made around the time we were both involved in Seattle’s vibrant jazz community in the early-to-mid 1950s. He left town to work with a variety of large and small bands. By the end of the decade Buddy had joined the big band his childhood friend Quincy Jones took to Europe that also included Seattleites Floyd Standifer and ...
