Gus Giordano, an early and tireless popularizer of American jazz dance who organized the first Jazz Dance World Congress, died on March 9 in Chicago. He was 84. The cause was pneumonia, according to his daughters, Nan and Amy Giordano. Mr. Giordano was best known through the performing of his company, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, founded in 1962 and based in Evanston, and through his teaching at dance conventions throughout the United States. Dennis Irwin, who for more than 30 years was a much-in-demand New York jazz bassist and whose recent illness became a rallying point for jazz musicians without medical insurance, died on Monday in Manhattan. Teo Macero, a record producer, composer and saxophonist most famous for his role in producing a series of albums by Miles Davis in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including editing that almost amounted to creating compositions after the recordings, died on Tuesday in Riverhead, N.Y. The legendary French entertainer Henri Salvador died this morning at age 90. He had enjoyed an illustrious seven-decades-long career as one of France's best-known personalities thanks in part to his long recording history and to his pioneering work in French television. Salvador worked with some of the worlds greatest performers, including Burt Bacharach, who once served as his pianist for performances at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and Quincy Jones, with whom he enjoyed a close friendship.
