How to Create a Killer Fan Newsletter

Source: We All Make Music

If there is one aspect of your online marketing toolbox that you should never, ever neglect, it's your fan newsletter. Even though social networking sites have exploded in popularity, e-mail marketing is still one of the most effective marketing channels around. Having fans' e-mail addresses (and zip codes when possible) gives you access to valuable data that you own (as opposed to relying on third party sites to store them), as well as permission to contact them directly. In order to ...

The Majors Really Hate the Cloud. Just Ask mSpot...

Source: Digital Music News

Not-so-little mSpot has had a cloud-based music service for months, yet they are likely to get eclipsed by the likes of Amazon, Google, and Apple. So goes the game, and this is one thunderstorm that could be tough to weather. But instead ofenabling licensing to sell MP3s within their cloud structure, major labels eventually denied those permissions. mSpot pushed forward without a commerce package. The Crazy Bond Between Artist and Entrepreneur...

The Crazy Bond Between Artist and Entrepreneur...

Source: Digital Music News

The music industry has a notoriously high rate of failure—not just for entrepreneurs, but also for artists. In fact, both groups are pursuing dreams with helaciously bad odds. And great business ideas—just like talented artists—often fail to break through. Hey, that's the sandbox, but if there's any place where the stigma of failure's been defeated, it's the US. And more specifically, Silicon Valley, where failure is not only culturallyaccepted, but oftentimes praised as a stepping stone towards future success. Which ...

Cruel Sister: Music for String Orchestra by Bang-on-a-Can's Julia Wolfe

Cruel Sister: Music for String Orchestra by Bang-on-a-Can's Julia Wolfe

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

For all my exposure to the marvelous Downtown New York institution Bang-on- a Can, I have not had the pleasure of hearing much of the music of co-founder-composer Julia Wolfe. There is no good reason for this. It simply is an omission on my part. The situation has been rectified by listening to her new release of compositions for the string orchestra Ensemble Resonanz, Cruel Sister (Cantaloupe 21069). The album contains two longish works: “Cruel Sister" (2004), based on the ...
