Warren Wolf - (Self Titled) (Mack Avenue, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Vibraphonist Warren Wolf has a light and dexterous sound that makes this album an appealing mainstream jazz experience. He in joined on this recording by Christian McBride on bass, Peter Martin on piano, Greg Hutchinson on drums, Tim Green on alto and soprano saxophone, and Jeremy Pelt sits in on trumpet for a few tracks. Opening with “427 Mass. Ave." the music is upbeat with a touch of funk and nice drumming. Pelt adds some punchy trumpet to the festivities, ...

Woody Witt - Pots and Kettles (2011)

Source: Something Else!

If you're a jazz fan in the Houston, Texas, area, you've surely heard of saxophonist Woody Witt. A tireless music educator around town, the manager and artistic director of one of Houston's few jazz clubs, and a recording artist in his own right, Witt has a long list of credentials that could easily make up an entire long article on its own. But for now, we'll focus on his eighth album in just nine years, Pots and Kettles. On this ...

Sarah Vaughan: Roulette Years

Sarah Vaughan: Roulette Years

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Jazz artsts' recordings in the late 1950s and early '60s were often a direct reflection of their labels' budgets, producers' visions and arrangers' whims. Count Basie, for example, sounded a bit stiff and buttoned up on Verve but unleashed on Roulette. Sonny Stitt sounded thought out and on point on Roost but a bit let's-get-this-over-with on many of his Prestige sessions. In keeping with this line of thinking, I've always loved Sarah Vaughan on Roulette. Working with producers Teddy Reig ...

Rising Reggae Artists The Green Release Advance "Love & Affection" EP (Easy Star)

Source: Press Junkie PR

Four extraordinary talents, one scene-shaking reggae band: That's The Green, four boys hailing from Hawaii who burst out last year with their self-titled debut album. Now the promise of The Green's youth-infused roots reggae revival is set to ...

Nicole Mitchell's "Awakening": Flautist on Top

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

In case we need proof, Nicole Mitchell's Awakening (Delmark 599) shows us that Ms. Mitchell has become one of the premier flute players today. It's a swinging quartet date with well-chosen players, some of Chicago's very best. And it's about as close to straight-ahead as you are likely to hear from Nicole. Now don't make the mistake of thinking that straight-ahead is necessarily synonymous with playing it safe, with endless repetitions of licks and cliches from earlier musical styles. That ...
