Five CD Discoveries of the Week

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
February 4, 2014

My workload last week prevented me from sharing with you my CD discoveries this past weekend. So here they are now... Those familiar with Bob Dorough know that his arranging skills are as shrewd as his songs, piano playing and vocals. On Eulalia (Merry Lane), we get to hear all of Dorough's talents. Dorough's vocal style isn't everyone's cup of tea. It assumes the all-natural sound of someone warbling in the shower. But the combination of his almost cartoonish vocal ...

Dee Bell & Marcos Silva Release "Silva • Bell • Elation" January 21 (Laser Records)

Source: Michael Bloom Media Relations
February 2, 2014

“Silver Bells” was the Bell Family signature Christmas song. It was a tradition in our family holiday jam sessions. Because of this, the merging of the two names Marcos Silva and Dee Bell seemed tunefully obvious. Elation was the result of the Silva Bell musical partnership. From the first recording with Stan Getz to the present, the rhythms and music of Brazil have infused new tonal colors and energy into the music that enlivens my spirit. Stan and Eddie Duran ...

Two New Perfect Albums

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
January 31, 2014

I'm sorry to cost you money, but trust me, these will be dollars well spent. Two albums crossed my desk recently that are close to perfect. One is a jazz orchestral album and another is a bossa nova release by way of Spain. I've listened to both from top to bottom multiple times and I can say without reservation that I could repeat this listening process all day long without ever changing the music. First, the orchestral album. It's Balance ...

Revolutionary Snake Ensemble's "Live Snakes" To Be Released By Accurate Records March 11

Source: Terri Hinte Publicity
January 29, 2014

Boston-based saxophonist/composer Ken Field has drawn deeply from the wellspring of the New Orleans brass band tradition since forming his Revolutionary Snake Ensemble in 1990. Using the boisterous rhythms of that tradition as a launching pad for unbridled improvisations on both original and traditional material, the band has emerged as a singular force in the music. Their third CD, Live Snakes, set for March 11 release by Accurate Records, captures their distinctive sound in all its expressive glory. Recorded in ...
