Source:
Michael Bloom Media Relations
With Subtext, the unique trajectory of Steve Khan’s musical story expands and evolves, while re-asserting its linkage to the broad sweep of a fascinating discography, one off to the side of conventional. In short, Khan’s body of recorded work affirms that common ideal and true ambition defining jazz artistry: to create a personal, identifiable voice.Ever the artist-deserving-wider-recognition, Khan has mastered a signature sound of his own devising, involving the inspired blending of touch—by turns feathery and pointed—angular yet emotive phrasing, ...

Bill Laswell's M.O.D. Technologies Presents Helio Parallax Featuring A Line-up Of Distinctive Guest Artists - Plus Record Release Party
Source:
Antje Hübner
With pioneering explorations in time and space, Helio Parallax presents a sound deeply rooted in spiritual expression. It is true analog electronic music (no laptops) with cinematic landscapes (think Blade Runner meets Miles Davis’ Elevator To The Gallows sound track) anchored by deep, dub/hip-hop beats - an atmospheric landscape coined “Sci-Fi Dub Noir.” Josh Werner (Wu Tang, Lee Scratch Perry, CocoRosie, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band) leads the charge with production and compositions born from futuristic collisionist thought. As Bass ...

Mundell Lowe: 'Souvenirs'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Every great jazz musician has a handful of albums that stand out even above their vast catalog of superb works. I call these “sweet spot" recordings, which feed right into what you love best about the artist. Guitarist Mundell Lowe is no exception. According to Tom Lord's Jazz Discography, he has recorded on more than 360 known jazz sessions, and many of those albums are first rate. One of my favorites is Souvenirs: A Tribute to Nick Ceroli (Jazz Alliance). ...

Six CD Discoveries of the Week
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
This week, my favorites cover a wide range of styles—jazz piano, soul-jazz, country-soul, pop-rock and what used to be known as “hillbilly"... Leslie Pintchik—In the Nature of Things (Pintch Hard). There's a Bill Evans quality about Pintchik's jazz piano. She listens to herself, she embraces space and keeps things spare except for the beauty of her chord voicings and improvised lines, and she swings by making strategic use of pedal tones—building ideas in a succession of statements. And like Evans, ...
