Peter Nero: 'Sunday in New York'
Source:

In the early 1960s, when virtually all feature films were shot in color, New York played a leading role. Fake city sets on studio lots were no longer suitable stand-ins for Gotham. Also unacceptable was shooting a few outdoor scenes in New York and staging the rest. If you were going to feature New York City as a backdrop, you simply had to film on location. [Above, Rod Taylor and Jane Fonda in Sunday in New York] Many of these ...

Gato Barbieri: 'Caliente!'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
New York hit 90 degrees yesterday with 50% humidity. Though it's summer, the city hasn't really experienced that much heat this summer. At any rate, down came the shades, on went the air conditioning and I decided to spend my writing day listening to tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri. The album that I kept coming back to was Caliente! (1976), though I love Que Passa (1997) and Barbrieri's magnum opus, Last Tango in Paris (1972). Caliente! was recorded for A&M Records ...

Ken Hanna: 'Jazz for Dancers'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
As record-industry profits surged in the mid-1950s with the introduction of the 12-inch LP and advent of fancier phonograph consoles, labels upped their recording quotas. A higher total number of albums needed to be recorded by year's end meant producers taking a few extra risks, especially in the New York and Los Angeles studios. As a result, the decade is dotted with all sorts of obscure recordings, some terrific and others not so much. Admittedly, there were plenty of dreadful ...

Rosemary Clooney: CBS, 1955-61
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
I never fully got Rosemary Clooney. I always felt she sounded a little too stuffy—like someone who lives at home and on Saturday nights belts from the window of her family apartment in the old neighborhood. Her voice was a bit too husky and sincere for me—like Judy Garland with a cold. Yet arrangers, musicians and star singers loved her, which I never quite understood. What was I missing? Then I heard The Rosemary Clooney CBS Radio Recordings 1955-61, a ...
