Mike Zito: Keep Coming Back
Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
After sideman work, then membership in cooperative groups with Cyrille Neville, Devon Allman and others, in 2012 the St. Louis blues guitarist and singer Mike Zito formed his band, The Wheel. Few dedicated jazz listeners also keep up with developments in the music that grows out of country blues pioneers like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson and Tampa Red—and such later urban performers as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and Big Bill Broonzy. Over the past century, hundreds of blues artists ...

In 2001 and 2002, Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren released songbook tributes to Jule Styne and Victor Young, respectively, with his trio and special guests. Sco: Country for Old Men

Earlier this year, guitarist John Scofield won a Grammy for his album, Past Present. Released in 2015, Past Present came on the heels of tough times for Sco—the 2013 passing of his son, Evan, to sarcoma at age 26. Sco's music on the album was haunting and pained, the ache of a father and a family that endured the worst possible loss. His new album, Country for Old Men (Impulse!), released today, is on the same trail bound for similar ...

In the spring of 1968, Joachim E. Berendt (above) of Germany's MPS label caught wind that alto saxophonists Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Pony Poindexter and Leo Wright were all in Europe touring separately. Berendt took a chance and reached out to all of them, inviting them to MPS's fabled recording studios in Villingen, in the Black Forest. Berendt also hired pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christiensen. On June 2 and 3, the seven musicians recorded seven ...

Recording engineer Jim Czak is a dear friend. I've stood behind him numerous times at the old Nola Studios on New York's 57th St. when he's been in charge of sound, and the results on jazz recordings have always been spectacular. So when Jim reached out a couple of weeks ago to let me know about a new album he had just finished recording, I told him to send it along for a listen. Jim has great taste. Yesterday, after ...

Rob and Earl Swope: 'Bone Bros.
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Rob and Earl Swope were brothers, with Earl three years older. Both played a gorgeous, deft and spirited trombone. In the late 1940s, Earl played with Woody Herman while Rob played with Buddy Rich, Chubby Jackson and Gene Krupa. The brothers from Washington, D.C., were in the same trombone section on only a handful of recordings: with Elliot Lawrence's band in 1951, with Joe Timer and the Orchestra in 1953 and with Dizzy Gillespie in 1955. But in those bands, ...
