Bud Shank and Three Trombones

Bud Shank and Three Trombones

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Bud Shank was among the most recorded West Coast jazz reed players. He was on more than 600 known sessions, according to Tom Lord's Jazz Discography. Heard most often on alto saxophone, Bud began his recording career in 1947 with Ike Carpenter and then with Charlie Barnet in 1948 before joining Stan Kenton's Innovations Orchestra in 1950. He left the band with Shorty Rogers and others in 1952 to pioneer a more swinging West Coast jazz style in small ensembles, ...

Hampton Hawes: All Night

Hampton Hawes: All Night

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I've never been a huge fan of pianist Hampton Hawes. His keyboard assault on many leadership trio albums are frantic and more concerned with speed and percussive impact than harnessed intensity. The result is a jarring listen followed by a headache. Dazzling jazz pianists who skillfully held their emotional horses include Art Tatum, Bud Powell, Al Haig, Erroll Garner and Billy Taylor, to name just a few. The burner under Hawes's proverbial pan was up way too high when he ...

Red Garland: First Trio LP

Red Garland: First Trio LP

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Pianist Red Garland's first leadership recording came during Miles Davis's May 1956 session for an album that would be called Workin'. Under pressure to record enough material for two albums to meet half his remaining obligation to Prestige Records, Davis let Garland record one of the tracks in the trio format—Ahmad Jamal's Ahmad's Blues. The result was so spectacular that Prestige decided to record Garland on an entire album in August '56. The album was A Garland of Red, with ...

Thelonious Monk: Movie Music

Thelonious Monk: Movie Music

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Pianist Thelonious Monk recorded only one movie soundtrack in his career—for the French film Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 (The Dangerous Laisons), directed by Roger Vadim in 1959. The film was about a married couple who help each other have extramarital affairs (hey, it was France in the late 1950s). Though the film was largely panned, it helped actress Jeanne Moreau gain greater visibility and a leading role in Seven Days...Seven Nights (1960), which won her a Cannes Film Festival award. ...

Art Pepper Quartet: Nov. 1956

Art Pepper Quartet: Nov. 1956

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

The second half of 1956 was a highly successful recording period for alto saxophonist Art Pepper. His streak began in July of that year when he appeared on Shorty Rogers' The Big Shorty Rogers Express (RCA). Prior to July, Pepper endured a tough emotional period. He served time in jail on drug charges from February to July 1955. But his freedom was short-lived. After violating the terms of his early release, Pepper was back in prison from July 1955 to ...
