Jazz Village [Pias] Sets October 20, 2017 Release For World-renowned Bassist Composer Kyle Eastwood’s "In Transit"
Source:
EastWest Media
Capping two extraordinary decades as a recording and performing artist, Kyle Eastwood’s stylistically eclectic new album In Transit reflects the whirlwind reality of the breakneck schedule that Kyle and his longtime ensemble keep as they perform three quarters of the year in Europe—with a yearly jaunt to Asian countries and occasional swings to the U.S. The Los Angeles bred, Paris based bassist and composer estimates that about half of the tracks were “road tested,” with a few rendered completely fresh ...

Alto Saxophonist Richie Cole To Release New CD, "Latin Lover," October 20
Source:
Terri Hinte Publicity
Alto saxophonist Richie Cole has covered a lot of stylistic ground since he left the Berklee School of Music in 1969 to join the Buddy Rich Band at age 21. Long known as a torchbearer for bebop, Cole started referring to his style of playing as “Alto Madness” in the 1970s, and that has been his motto ever since. In the course of a prolific career fast approaching the half-century mark, Cole has included Latin jazz tunes on many recordings, ...

Bill Charlap: Uptown, Downtown
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
The last time I saw pianist Bill Charlap was in July at 92Y's Jazz in July series in New York, where he directed one of the most spectacular jazz concerts I've seen in some time. Bill's trio backed Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson, two legendary tenor saxophonists who were in superb form that night. Much of the concert's cohesion and success was a result of Bill's inspiring performance. His solos were so imaginative and impeccable throughout that both Jimmy and ...

Leo Parker: Savoy, 1947
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Leo Parker is one of the most under-recorded and under-appreciated baritone saxophonists of the bebop era. Like many jazz musicians in the late 1940s and early '50s, Parker succumbed to drug addiction and recorded far too little as a leader. He probably was more suited to be a sideman, leaving the responsibilities of contracting players, writing songs, arranging and holding rehearsals to others. A clear example of Parker's brilliance was his first leadership session for Savoy Records in October 1947. ...

Art Pepper with Sheldon and Manne

Laurie's Loophole—that would have been a great song title if Art Pepper had decided to name an original song after his wife's ingenious discovery. In 1979, Laurie Pepper spotted a way around her husband Art Pepper's contract with Fantasy/Galaxy Records. Approached by Yupiteru, a Japanese record label eager to record Pepper on straight-ahead West Coast jazz, Laurie had an idea. While Pepper's contract with Fantasy prohibited him from recording as a leader, there really was nothing stopping him from appearing ...

Born in Sicily, Giuseppe Millaci is a young jazz musician and composer with a portfolio of distinguished credentials. After relocating to Belgium as a teenager, Millaci began playing double bass and was influenced by jazz luminaries such as Ray Brown, Dave Holland and Marc Johnson. In 2007, he was accepted at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and trained under the guidance of maestro Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. In 2011, he won the Erasmus Scholarship and attended the Maastricht Academy of Music, graduating ...

Ella With the London Symphony

Elvis started it, and symphony orchestras are reaping the rewards. Back in 2015, Elvis Presley Enterprises teamed with producers Nick Patrick and Don Reedman, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for If I Can Dream. The 14-song album featured Elvis's original vocal tracks with the original instrumentals removed and replaced by the Royal Philharmonic playing new orchestrations. I suspect the concept was conceived following an unusual concert at Radio City Music Hall in February 2011. The event featured a collection of ...

Bassist / Composer Matthew Golombisky Releases 12 Aural "Short-Stories" With Close Music Cohorts / Improvisers On This Cassette Release
Source:
Matthew Golombisky
All About Jazz writer Jakob Baekgaard recently called Matthew Golombisky a modern “renaissance man”. He is a forward moving, fast acting, and busy artist. Between his acoustic/electric bass performing, commissioned compositions (including his work on Australian singer/songwriter Via Tania’s latest album, featuring his Tomorrow Music Orchestra, his film scoring contributions to Argentine director Alejo Domínguez’s feature film, La Soñada, or creating improvisation teaching supplements for the Institute for Creative Music), directing, filming and editing music videos and/or release trailers (ie. ...
