Canary in the Coal Mine - What the Video Business Can Learn from the Music Business

Source: Digital Cowboys By Dave Kusek

Netflix — the poster child for premium Internet video services — was birthed by iTunes and other online music services before it. Yes, movies and music are fundamentally different forms of media, but the online video guys can learn a lot from the transformation of the music business. What works and what doesn’t. Peter Csathy from TechCrunch says that three ingredients that have proven to be essential for the success of any online music service apply equally to the premium ...

STLJN Saturday Video Showcase: "Punk Jazz" with the Dead Kenny Gs

STLJN Saturday Video Showcase: "Punk Jazz" with the Dead Kenny Gs

Source: St. Louis Jazz Notes by Dean Minderman

If the seminal punk bands Black Flag or the Dead Kennedys were to jam with members of Sun Ra's Arkestra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and James Brown's JBs, the end result might sound a bit like the Dead Kenny Gs, who are coming to St. Louis next Saturday, May 26 to perform at 2720 Cherokee. The music of percussionist/vocalist Mike Dillon, saxophonist/keyboardist Skerik, and bassist and saxophonist Brad Houser has been dubbed ...

Both Evinar and Gyroskope are services that musicians can use to monetize streaming video. Evinar focuses on livestreaming via Facebook while Gyroskope features videos for which customers pay to stream as often as they like. Neither service is exclusive to musicians but both seem potentially useful to musicians attempting to diversity their revenue streams. Please let us know what you think about these options in the comments. And please consider answering this question, what are you looking for as a ...

This week, our video spotlight shines on drummer Dafnis Prieto, who will be in St. Louis to perform next Wednesday, May 9 through Saturday, May 12 at Jazz at the Bistro. This will be Prieto's debut as a bandleader at the Bistro, but you may recognize his name as a recipient of one of the 2011 MacArthur Fellowships, often referred to colloquially as “genius grants." Prieto, who's 37 and was born in Cuba, ...

Zoot Sims: September Song

Zoot Sims: September Song

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In November 1966, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims recorded an unusual album for Impulse. The Waiting Game featured a full orchestra with strings, reeds and harp that was arranged by Gary McFarland and conducted by Jack Parnell. What made this date special, in addition to McFarland's unorthodox charts, was that Sims sang and played on one track—September Song. Like Jack Teagarden, whose untrained but honest, passionate voice always managed to touch listeners deeply, Sims' rendition here on September Song has the ...

Shelly Manne: Checkmate

Shelly Manne: Checkmate

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

The previous item about the Blackhawk triggered thoughts of Shelly Manne (1920-1984) and the quintet he led in the late 1950s and early ‘60s. As chance would have it, this morning I encountered videos of a superb edition of that band. The pieces are from Manne’s 1961 album Checkmate. The drummer’s group had pianist Russ Freeman, trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca and bassist Monty Budwig. For the 2002 CD reissue of the album, I wrote this summary: Long ...
