Benny Golson: Germany, 2000

Benny Golson: Germany, 2000

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Benny Golson is one of jazz's most lyrical tenor saxophonists and among its most gifted songwriters. His astonishing catalog of jazz standards includes I Remember Clifford, Stablemates, Whisper Not, Along Came Betty, Blues March, Killer Joe and so many others. His large number of albums recorded in the 1950s show off his composing gifts and his smoky, slippery tenor sound. His group the Jazztet in the early 1960s pulled all of his talents together in one sophisticated package. You'll find ...

In the early and mid-1940s, there were three tenor saxophonists who radically changed the instrument's role in a solo setting—Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Ben Webster. Each had his own distinct sound—bossy and fluid on up-tempo tunes and seductive on ballads. Webster played with a range of bands in the early 1930s, joining Duke Ellington in 1935. By 1940, Webster was a major soloist in the band—his airy, vibrato-rich phrasing towering over the orchestra on songs like Cotton Tail. Webster ...

This week, let's turn our video spotlight on Red Baraat, who are returning to St. Louis to play this coming Thursday, August 29 at The Gramophone. Based in Brooklyn and led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is a nine-piece group with an instrumentation similar to a New Orleans brass band (two reeds, three percussion, four brass). Having already played The Gramophone back in May, this will be their second St. Louis gig this year. Red Baraat's “dhol & brass" ...

Weekend Extra: Bing and Trane

Weekend Extra: Bing and Trane

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

I don’t know whether “Love Thy Neighbor” is the most unlikely song John Coltrane ever recorded, but his 1958 version is one of the most delightful. Mack Gordon and Harry Revel wrote it for the 1934 movie We’re Not Dressing, a classic of the shipwreck survivor genre. Bing Crosby sang it beautifully in a contrived sequence that also involved Carole Lombard, Ethel Merman and Leon Errol. Listen to Crosby’s bluesy phrasing and inflection in the verse. He was, after all, ...
