Video: Monetizing the Concert Experience

Video: Monetizing the Concert Experience

Source: HypeBot

Midem recently posted the video of a portion of the panel I hosted earlier this year, Monetizing the Concert Experience, and after yesterday's dismal earnings report from Live Nation it seems particularly appropriate to share it here.  If revenue from live music is going help offset declining music sales, it's clear that we need to find new ways to improve the concert experience before during and after the show, as well as, to monetize it. I was joined on the ...

Barnes and Noble to Sell Kids "Educational Toys" in the Place of Music - Good Riddance.

Barnes and Noble to Sell Kids "Educational Toys" in the Place of Music - Good Riddance.

Source: HypeBot

In select pilot locations, Barnes and Noble will be eliminating their music sections entirely. Where the CDs once sat, educational toys will be placed. To some, this may seem like a sign of the times, but I respectfully disagree. The reason that Barnes and Noble isn't making good on its CD sales probably has more to do with their sheer neglect of reality than it does the lagging interest of consumers. With just a preliminary scan, any reasonable fan would ...

Can Christmas Cure Music's YTD Sales Slump?

Can Christmas Cure Music's YTD Sales Slump?

Source: HypeBot

The pressure is on inside every major label, as radio promotion departments scramble to find a few major hit singles to help reverse yet another year to date sales slump. With only 11 shopping weeks remaining in 2010, the recorded music industry overall is down 13.6% from last year with both digital and physical sales factored in. For country music (down 12.5%), that means that in the next 11 weeks, they need to sell 18.377 million more units or 1.67 million ...

Artist Revenue Opportunities Without Playing Live

Artist Revenue Opportunities Without Playing Live

Source: HypeBot

This guest post is by Bobby Owsinski. Triangle Exception, a winner of the Hypebot Hit Song Contest got to pose two questions to him as their prize.* In most cases, recorded music has always been somewhat of a promotion for the live show. It's a little known fact that most musical artists have always made as much as 95% of their income from playing live, if we take publishing out of the equation. Even artists that were selling millions of ...

Nielson Clarifies Digital Sales Report

Nielson Clarifies Digital Sales Report

Source: HypeBot

After a stating last week that U.S. digital sales we're flat, Nielson is now clarifying their findings.  “The initial Nielsen analysis was focussed exclusively on digital single sales and did not look at the strong growth in digital albums, which we expect to continue. Or, the impact variable pricing for singles has had on increasing industry revenue," Nielsen Entertainment president Eric Weinberg told Music Ally. “Nielsen data continues to show strong growth in digital music consumption." he added. “In addition ...

Unprofitable Vevo Has "10's of Millions" in Revenue

Source: HypeBot

Vevo's revenue is in the “tens of millions," collected through sponsorships and advertising, but the site is still not profitable, CEO Rio Caraeff told an audience at TechCrunch Disrupt yesterday. “Vevo is an experiment on a grand scale," according to Careff, with more than 50% of revenue passed on to the labels and artists. “We've proven that we can aggregate a large audience," he continued, “and proven that music is valuable to advertisers. If people are passionate than we can ...

How Has the Economy Affected the Music Industry?

How Has the Economy Affected the Music Industry?

Source: HypeBot

In part because it was already in it's own downward spiral, it has been difficult to get an accurate read on exactly how the poor economy has impacted the music industry. But Billboard's Glenn Peoples has offered the best brief summary yet of the slump's overarching affect on every corner of both the traditional and emerging music industry: “This continued economic malaise puts downward pressure on items like concert ticket prices, demand for consumer electronics (which influence the adoption of ...

Nielson Report: U.S. Digital Music Sales Flat

Nielson Report: U.S. Digital Music Sales Flat

Source: HypeBot

According to a new report from Nielsen Research, 630 million digital music tracks were bought in the US in the first six months of this year. That number essentially equals sales for the same period a year ago and follows two years of  expansion: 13% 2008-2009 and 28% 2007-2008. Most record labels have projected slow but continued digital growth; though few believed download sales would offset declines in physical revenue.  According to Jean Littolff, managing director of Nielsen Music, flat ...
