Last week, TechDirt highlighted this great quote from comic book writer Mark Waid and I hadn't gotten a chance to post about it till now. Waid recently spoke at the Harvey Awards and gave a semi-controversial talk about copyright, the public domain and learning to embrace file sharing. Wanting to further clarify his points and clear up some of the confusion that arose from his statements, Waid took the time to publish a written version of his talk. Of interest ...

The document (below) closely follows a disclosure by Universal Music Group showing an $840,000 spend during the same ...

Known more notably for his role as frontman of the viral video and YouTube sensations OK Go and his perspective on being that very thing on a record label that willfully disables the sharing functionality that made his group famous, Damian Kulash is now weighing in on an issue even more near and dear to his heart: net neutrality and the future of the web. From his perspective, many of the negotiations taking place today that have the potential to ...

Cary Sherman, the RIAA, and Their Failure to Change the Culture of File-Sharing

Source:
HypeBot
It's not hard to imagine why the RIAA is one of the most loathed, criticized and beleaguered industry trade groups of the last decade. Cary Sherman is the president of their board of directors and has worked there for 13 years; he is, more or less, the public face of the organization, known most famously for suing everyone and their grandmother. Asked in a recent interview for his perspective on how effective their transition in strategy from ligation as a ...

FlowSongs: Why Paying Royalties is "Complicated"

Source:
HypeBot
A Graphic Illustration of Music Industry Madness. The concept behind the new Pure owned, cloud-based music service FlowSongs is pretty straightforward. You hear a song on the radio and want to buy it, but have to wait until next time your logged onto iTunes or maybe in a store. The company hopes to amend this disparity by allowing users to purchase songs off the radio immediatelyif they wish. This is where things get a little tricky though, because once the ...
