ASHEVILLE—The historic Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa might feel a little like the Crescent City this weekend.
That's because the inn is hosting its 19th annual All That Jazz Weekend. This year's event is New Orleans-themed and will feature concerts by jazz giants Henry Butler, the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Butler, a solo pianist, will headline Friday evening. Although not his first time playing in Asheville, Butler said he thinks this will be his first concert at the Grove Park. Butler is known for combining the influences of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pops, blues and R&B into his playing.
“Jazz music is part of our heritage. All the people who are playing this weekend we grew up with it, and well, I guess it's safe to say we all love it," Butler said. “I think we all love music and what it does for us. It makes us happy it helps us to uplift the people that we're playing for. It's a savior of sorts in a way."
Marsalis, another pianist, is set to headline Saturday night with his quartet. Regarded by many as the premier modern jazz pianist in New Orleans, Marsalis has received numerous awards and accolades as a musician and educator through his career.
