BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION AT GINNY'S SUPPER CLUB AT RED ROOSTER HARLEM

Red Rooster Harlem celebrates the legacy of Black History and pays homage to leaders who helped to create an international cultural identity for millions of African Americans with a series in Ginny's Supper Club.

'King' Solomon Hicks has quickly built up a reputation in Harlem for being the torchbearer for the blues tradition. At only 19, Solomon performs almost nightly around the city and around the world. On this special evening, Solomon will demonstrate how the rich history of the blues is safe in his fingers and vocal chords.

In a time of Harlem enlightenment, Fats Waller stood out as a master who was able to merge high art with entertainment. The vivacious protégé of James P. Johnson has performed everywhere from the Lincoln Theatre on 135th street to Carnegie Hall to Hollywood, where he starred in feature films. Michael Mwenso, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Artist-in-residence at Joe's Pub, brings youthful energy to the legacy of Fats with fresh arrangements and a band full of talent. In 1926, Dr. Carter Woodson proposed celebrating Black History for a week in February, because Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass' birthdays were two days apart.

This month, the sounds of Sammy Miller and the Congregation - a 16-piece big band - will return to Ginny's Super Club for a night of marchin', swingin', but most importantly dancing in celebration of the man who issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The group's unique folk-infused repertoire will feature songs of The American Civil War, paired with inspirational speeches from the great Abraham Lincoln.

Timothy Bloom is a two-time Grammy® winner and was named a VH1 Soul “You Ought To Know Artist." Rock, folk, gospel, R&B - all make up his signature style. Herbie Hancock says of Bloom: “Timothy is very talented, sincere and passionate about good, relevant music. His music has all those elements. That's a hard combination to beat." Bloom is joined by Ethiopian-born, American R&B singer Wayna.

Riley Mulherkar will bring life to classics from Ellington's residency at the Cotton Club in Harlem, as well as some of Duke's lesser-known works written for his smaller ensembles, Mulherkar's dynamic sound and presence reaffirm the timeless mastery of Ellington's oeuvre.

Ben Wolfe (bass), Orrin Evans (piano), Donald Edwards (drums), Stacy Dillard (saxophone). Bassist/composer Ben Wolfe has gained a large following from his performances with Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. and Diane Krall. An early member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, today Wolfe stretches out on his own with a strong group of familiar musicians. The band is a gathering of first-call New York City talent, sure to burn up the stage at Ginny's!

Perhaps best known for his 1976 hit “You Are My Starship", Norman Connors has been on the scene as a drummer, composer, arranger and producer who has led some influential jazz and R&B groups. He's performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jean Carne, Michael Henderson, Norman Brown and Marion Meadows, to name a few. Bring your sweetheart for a romantic evening of love ballads and funky soul.
